It's iron alright, but not in one of it's magnetic forms. Not all forms of iron are magnetic.

When you see it in unburned coal it looks like it's in a rust state. Rust is either non-magnetic, or at most only mildly magnetic. Even if it is magnetic, it's usually not in enough quantity in coal for a magnet to stick to.

When you see it in clinkers, it has often fused together into a larger quality as the coal burned away, but it is non-magnetic "iron slag".

ALL of my coal burning problems disappeared when I took "WindyHill's" great advice and started using INTERIOR STOVE POLISH!!!!

What would this forum do w/o great posters like Windy!

You mean you haven't been polishing the inside of your stove ? No wonder it takes your stove so long to recover sometimes.
