Hello all! My Hitzer 983 has double doors with spinner knobs. I understand the combustion air for the coal must come from beneath via the ash door vents. What function, if any, do the spinner knobs in the loading door perform when burning coal? I understand their use in burning wood in the stove.

I forgot to add that I know to open them at loading time to burn off volatiles.....just wondering if there is any reason to use the spinners over an established coal fire?

Just to burn off the volatiles - that's about it. You won't need to open them more than a hair each.
Harman stoves leave out a length of gasket at the top & bottom of the glass to do the same. This also doubles as an air wash for the glass, keeping it cleaner & cooler.
