So my husband could buy that rope stuff and use the cement to stick that on around the edge of the ashpan , you think? I already suggested this and he said no don't be stupid it wont stick- but it might if you get the proper stuff, right?

Sure you use gasket cement and glue the rope or flat style gasket into place. They sell it by the foot on rolls. I will say that usually the rope type fits into a channel. But the flat is commonly glued into place. Not on the ashpan but round the ash pit door/or frame to stop the leaking.

The rope will only be a temporary fix...
Good for troubleshooting where the air leak is...
As designed and properly installed the stove/boiler is air tight...
The installer screwed up...
but you must be kind to them...
to get them to make it right...
Find the leak and see if it can be fixed without pulling the stove...
The problem with repairing this stove is unlike a free standing stove...
It is backfilled with portland and vercumlite...
This is why everyone is reluctant to pull out the stove...
Do you have a digital camera...
Tale some pictures of this stove and the gap...
and post them here on the forum...
Lots of smart folks here and I am sure the problem can be resolved...

If the stove is off...
Put a battery lantern in the stove and close the doors...
Darken the room...
Light will leak out where the air is entering the stove...
Pick the sweep's brain while they are there...
They have 'seen everything' and may have the solution or know someone who is qualified to fix the problem...

8-) 8-) 8-) YAAAY! The husband did the light thing this morning . There was a line of light along the top of the ashpit cover. The sweep then arrived and said you can adjust the hooks that hold the cover on, and he did with a spanner. So we're going to light it again now and hold our breath for half an hour to see what it does. I might be a wee bit blue but I will post and tell you  He did say if this doesn't totally fix it then to line the centre bottom of the ashpit cover with alcan foil.

Excellent news...
Don't forget to open the air dial from 0...
Sounds like you had a knowledgable sweep...
Keep his number handy...
