A friend of mine wants to get into the world of coal burning with a hand-fired stove, but has hit a snag. His house is a fairly new double-wide, and is classified as a "Mobile Home". I didn't realize this, but there are special code requirements for stoves installed in a mobile home.
1. They have to be UL approved for that purpose.
2. The legs must be made so that the stove can be bolted to the floor.
3. The house must be fitted with some sort of make-up air device.
So far, I have not found a single coal stove that is UL approved for use in a mobile home. Does anyone know of one that is?

Here is the Rule and many inspectors AND insurance companies aren't aware of it. If your stove was manufactured before January 1, 1981 it is EXEMPT from the requirement to be UL listed. Stoves made after that date are not exempt.

I have seen stoves for mobile homes advertised. They all had provision for outside air feed. This would eliminate any need for makeup air or it could be the device they are referring to.

Thanks Lisa. I had already read those threads and discovered that LL makes stoker stoves with the proper approvals. The problem is that he is looking for a hand-fired stove, and I have still not found one that is approved.lowfog01 wrote:This topic has come up before. Check out:

It would be great if I could find some sort of documentation that spelled that out...I doubt the local stove gestapo will take my word for it.EarthWindandFire wrote:Here is the Rule and many inspectors AND insurance companies aren't aware of it. Rob, you have a stove gestapo in chazy? lol. It must be selective enforcement. I don't know about chazy, but allan corron is pretty damn good to deal with in beekmantown, as long as your not sticking a stovepipe through a window and you've met basic safety and clearance requirements (or he knows you're not a schlump) you have no problems.

If this was in Chazy the stove would be burning by now! I could hook up a barrel stove in the living room and no one would care (except my wife).
His house is in Schuyler Falls, and apparently they have really tightened their building code & inspection process. I expect that if he puts a new chimney through the roof there will be a knock at the door shortly afterward.

Edit: OOOPS...that's a stoker too.
The Harman DVC-500 is one approved for mobile homes.
Cut&Paste:
Safety Testing (by Warnock Hersey):
ASTM E1509 • Mobile home-approved

I am pretty sure that Ceccil is right and it is only stokers. If it was me I would consider the stoker because of the ability to run it low and slow for the size of a mobile home. They have quite a range of BTU settings.McGiever wrote:Edit: OOOPS...that's a stoker too.

No need to sell me on stokers, but he is looking for something that doesn't require electric, and is quiet. He has a brand new (never fired) Chubby JR, but unfortunately there is no code-compliant way to install it. I suggested an "outlaw" install, but I guess people can't mind their own business in that neighborhood.
