I recently bought a house and I am looking to put a Harman Mark II inside the fireplace. I found one on Craigslist that I am looking into but its a little different than what I am used to seeing (I grew up in a home heated by a Mark II). The flue is exiting the stove on the very top instead of the back. Did Harman make the Mark series like this in the past, or is this an owner modification?

If it is an owner mod. he done real good. BUT, I doubt it is. Questions--is the price right, is the stove in good shape, grates, etc., will it work for your application???

Asking price $800 obo. Comes with "stove accessories" and extra ash pan. I asked for more pictures, which I am waiting for. I have plenty of space to fit it in the fireplace, and the flue coming out the top will actually make connecting to the stainless liner easier I believe.

I think the Mark's that they used to make fireplace inserts were top exhaust but don't quote me on that.

The Magnafire manual shows a "sort of" top exhaust.

It is a factory option, my MK III is a top vent.

That's what I was told once also, that if you wanted a top vent you had to order it special.

I'm a hopper kinda guy myself, but if this stove will work for you--the price ain't bad--if the grates are in good shape, you'd just be looking at replacing ALL gaskets.

Double check the baffle at the top of the firebox to make sure it is solid, not corroded, warped and/or flaking away.

Hand Fed Coal Stove: Harman Mark 3 Top Flue

The Mark III was offered (and probably still is) with either top or back vent as an option, the Mark II however I do not think it was offered in a top vent configuration, at least not as of 3 years ago they were not available in top vent, not even as an option or I would have bought one... Are you sure its not a Mark III??? The only physical difference between a Mark II and Mark III is the depth, height and width are exactly the same...

Mark II depth= 19 1/2"

Mark III depth= 24"

Probably older then 3 years. Also I think Fred has a good point about the hopper not being available on a top vent.

The Marks are not hopper fed stoves...
But FF has a Hitzer which are...
Check that top baffle and the grates for warpage...
Plan on replacing the gaskets...

I do have a MarkII, and it is a top vent. It is an older stove though as it has the two vertical bars in the top door. This was not a home owner mod, this is factory. The dealer in Westminster MD has new ones for 1800, just for reference.

Also, the Mark II has 2 grates and a 76 CFM blower, the Mark III has 3 grates and a 135 CFM blower. Rear vent is standard, top vent is optional, although I don't know if all 3 Mark series stoves were or are available as top vents.
