What type of fuel did you use before you got the Hitzer? Are you keeping the house warmer?
I burned 6.25 tons the winter I ran the Hitzer 82. Big house, and I kept it warm.

P.S. Any chance you get some of that "free" wind off Onondaga Lake?

Mine used 5-1/2 - 6 ton per year, heating 3400 square feet, up on a windy hill. Half of that was uninsulated block basement.

Hi , I am looking for some feedback on the Hitzer coal stove 5093 , I started buring coal this year in my vermont casting and thanks to the informative folks on this site I am hooked on coal but looking to get a bigger better hand fed coal stove and I have been tossing about several types and heard that the hitzer model 5093 is the best btus for the buck how do you like yours?
i finally figured out how to run the hitzer to get the most out of it. I actually like my hitzer now, if you go back and look at some of my earlier posts you will see that I had some issues with the 5093. im heating 2100 sq ft of brick house and it does pretty good as long as it stays outa the single didgets. it seems like I was the only one that really complained about the stove a few months back but I now realize the its the brick house with no insulation in the walls thats the issue. I have to run mine @5-600 degrees to keep the house kinda comfy, burning around 75 lbs of coal a day. I need the blower running as well to move the hot air. my power was out yesterday for 6-7 hrs and without the blower it didnt heat very well, which I already knew. I tried running it without the blower several times testing different ways to get the hot air through out the house. I think that its the best stove that you can get with a blower 100k btu. the ds machine @ 130k BTU is is a great stove as well but has no blower. freetownfred and coalfire were very helpful in my figuring out the stove.
markviii, I don't get any wind off onandaga lake I actually live 20 miles from that lake. im 10 miles from lake ontario. the coal stove is the only heat source for me. I bought the house last year and the boiler system was no good. all the pipes burst due to no one draining them down before the house sat for 2 yrs.

I had a vermont castings vigilant coal stove. Not the oldest, not the newest. It was inbetween. Kind of tempermental for most to run. Afterwards I bought the 50-93. Very easy to run. Way less work than the vermont castings. Way longer burn times. It made the vermont castings look like a toy. Member VigIIPeaBurner has the latest model vermont castings vigilant. It's a whole different animal than the one I had. Completely re-designed. And from what he says, his performs quite well.wingswheelssnow wrote:Hi , I am looking for some feedback on the Hitzer coal stove 5093 , I started buring coal this year in my vermont casting and thanks to the informative folks on this site I am hooked on coal but looking to get a bigger better hand fed coal stove and I have been tossing about several types and heard that the hitzer model 5093 is the best btus for the buck how do you like yours?

Heating 2500sqft uninsulated basement and I'm just finishing up 4 ton, Went and got 1.25 ton and figure it will take me through April 15. I can't say enough about the 50-93, house has been 72 to 73 degrees all winter with no sweat. Oliver Power gave me alot of good info when I got started and it didn't take no time at all, I had it figured out and on my way. I had figured it would take 5 ton for a season but wasn't sure so only ordered 4 ton and figured I would finish by getting what I needed toward the end of this season. Now I will adjust my bin to hold 5 ton for next year and get it early this summer. Thanks again Oliver.

Do take a look at the DS Machine line of stoves...
No blower but they are designed that way...
Hopper fed like the Hitzer but no fan noise...
The 'rents have a Hitzer 503 insert which they love...
I needed more heat and more coal in the stove...
No fans was a big deal for me as I can not stand the noise...

I'm gonna second the DS machine, I picked up a DS (Not an insert) and it was the best money I've ever spent. High BTU output (125K), no fans, 120 pounds of coal, hopper. Keeps my house 80*+
does anyone know anyone who have used both the 5093 and the ds stoves. just wondering because I need a little more heat output on the real cold days and the 130k ds sounds good but im just wondering how the heat moves with their design. I need to run my blower to move the heat and im wondering if the ds moved the heat with it design.

Heat moves very well off the DSM Basement #4 that I have...
The DSM stoves are designed to move the heat with no fans...
Moving the heat in your house is another issue...
Fan or no fan on the stove; if the house does not circulate the heat well you will have hot spots...
My house has large floor grills, 24x36 and is very open...
The stove is in the basement which stays 68-72*, the first floor floors are warm and that space stays 74-76*...
Both floors are used...
