Hand Fed Coal Stove: DS Machines DS-1600 Hot Air Circulator

Post by I'm On Fire » Sun. Feb. 13, 2011 7:00 pm

So, every year I go get my taxes done in Hewitt, NJ and every year I comment on my tax lady's stove and how much I love it.

It's a Godin, I'm not sure what model but she says its a wood stove but I don't think it is. Because it looks like it may be a base burner and it has a grate system and from what I saw it seems to have a shaker handle.

She says she bought it a few years ago at a garage sale for $50 and the only reason she bought it was because she thought it was pretty. Last year when I went to have my taxes done it was the only source of heat in the office and it was pleasantly warm. This year she is using a gas fired furnace because her chimney needs to be replaced. I was almost tempted to offer her $50 for it.

I'm hoping someone on here has more info on this stove. :D

As for additional pics that was all I could get..I could ask if she'd let me take some more detailed photos of it such as the interior of it. But it's highly doubtful. By the way, my wife called me a dork when I was looking at it.

Its the small Godin which is rated to produce 17,000 BTU and holds 20 pounds of coal. Wood is also recommended.

You are not alone in liking the looks, almost everyone does. The design goes back to 1889.

The combustion air is fed mainly through the front grate and the burn pattern is front to back which results in bridging of the coal. Many resort to opening the front grate and just shoveling out the ash. The ash pan is tiny and needs frequent emptying, tending is messy. Claimed efficiency is 72%.

She stole it for $50, most go for $300 and up, way up.

There was also one listed for 2900 but that does not mean they will get it.

Maybe this will help.
When we were stove shopping in the mid 1980's we looked at the Godins and I still have the pamphlet.
Below is a pic of the two round models. The large round on the left is model 3731 and the small round on the right is model 3730.
Looking at the emblem on your pic from the tax office, that looks like the large round 3731.
According to the specs in the pamphlet it should hold 60 lbs of nut or takes up to 20" logs.
I could be wrong, so measure it next time your there and hope the wife doesn't call you something else. :P

Large is 39" tall and the small is 32" tall.
