My finished basement is 350 sqft, and my upstairs is 800 sqft. Its a bi-level home with dor open tp upstairs. I want a caol stove w/o any electric as I have many power outages in winter. Yet the Alaska Kodiak that I have on order is way to big for the room. Also, the way behind where the stove is going is a closet, thus stove requires a heat shield.

Any opinions? I would put stove upstairs, but I have no easy way to dump coal without carying it back downstairs--reisking more mess to a nice fairly new home.

Hello ron54 from what I see on Alaska web page clearance from wall to back of stovepipe is 6" and back of stove is 14" how close is the closet to the stove by the way the kodiak will heat your whole house Plus your neighbors burning on low is 15K on high 100K that would be around 3000 sq ft did you order it with the blower fan if not I would it will help keep the stove cooler plus it will send the heat upstairs you would be better off keeping it downstairs way to much heat upstairs you would have to keep all of the windows open upstairs to sleep or for that matter to breath My friend has about the same size house and he has a old Harman Hero about the same size as the mark 1 around 48k BTU and that heats his whole house he built a red brick harth in the corner across from the staircase that goes upstairs the heat flows right up there if you can keep it downstairs in the long run you are better off no mess upstairs and you can keep the coal down there to Plus you will be more comfortable good luck and take care

Thanks JC, In front of stove 20" is a wood post holding up house. If I run at 15000 BTU, its probably ok. I'm out of house 15 hours per day, and I want to come home to a warm home especially upstairs. Ordered it w/o blower, and could still change to Liberty ( though its alot more money), and with frequent whole day power outages I would need a robust battery backup. As it is I'm spending over $4000 w/chimney & 54" hearth.

I would not worry to munch about the post 20" should be plenty of space just keep a eye on it as far as 15 hrs gone you should be ok the hopper holds 120lbs of coal so you should have 3 to 4 days of coal on low 15k just remember to shake it down in the morning and then before bedtime I don't think you will have to worry about coming home to a cold house you will have more then enough heat but if you do not just give it a little more air remember it will put out 15k up to 100k so you have a pretty big control range to play with more air more heat less air less heat you will have to play around with it until you find your sweet spot how much more is the blower I would order one if I were you it will help keep the stove cooler plus it will push the heat out into the house ware you want it I also have alot of power outages so handfeed are for me I would stick with the kodiak you will always have heat as long as you keep coal in it and shake the ash down and you do not have to keep the blower on all the time if it gets to hot unplug it or if you are to cold plug it in for more heat well good luck with it and keep us posted take care
