How to Read/Set Barometric Damper ?

Modern and vintage hand fired coal stove are similar to a wood stove and in some cases can burn either. They need to be regulated and fed by hand usually every 12 to 24 hours depending on your usage. They require no power to operate making them ideal for rural settings with long power outages.

Quick question where on the knob of the barometric meter do you line it up with the correct setting i.e .04 ? Do you use left side,right side or center of knob ?I attached photo to explain what I am talking about. I use the center

To answer your question as the manufacturer intends their product to be used, you would line up the left side with the semi-circle appropriate for the measure you are looking for in the vertical scale as you have pictured... BUT, I have found like most here that they are not at all acurate and should not be trusted... A Manometer should be used to determine actual draft on the stove (over the fire draft) as well as chimney draft to properly set the weight (knob) on the baro...

Without a manometer to measure draft you will have to make the setting by observing the behavior of your stove.

The purpose of the Baro is to moderate excessive draft. Draft will vary with outside conditions and with stack temperature. On an average cold clear day with mild wind a stove with manual set air opening will gradually build up heat as the load of coal is fully lit. Stack temperature rises and so does draft, causing the coal to burn faster and raising stack temperature and draft some more and in turn raising stack temperature and draft more. Unless you intervene and close down the air the stove runs too hot and high stack temperatures are wasteful.

Using a surface thermometer on the stack about a foot above the stove you should set the Baro to start opening when the temperature hits 200 degrees which is generally regarded as a good high limit for the stack. This is a rule of thumb and is not to replace the use of a manometer for more exact adjustment. By monitoring the stove over several days and maybe tweaking the adjustment you can arrive at a satisfactory point over time.

2, 4, 6 is the ,02, .04, .06, etc...for draft, it's only a close approx. if you don't have a draft gauge. As you move it OUT away from center, as you see it goes to 2 (left side - LIGHTER weight on center), that will react FASTER and LESS draft is needed to open it.

AS you move it to the right, (heavy), it will take more draft to open (ie. .04, .06, etc)
