I have one in my basement right now and use it during the shoulder months for hot water to the radiators and DHW via a plate heat exchanger.
Sorry I was wrong about the origin. It was made in Milan Michigan by the American Boiler and Foundry Co. The one you have must be different. This link is the one I have. http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/railroad-boiler-restored-stove-coal-burner-rare

Correction on the coal fired hot water heater. I kind of mixed it up with my old parlor stove. The water heater was made by American Boiler and Foundry Co. Milan Michigan. I found this link of one restored, but still cant find the approximate age. http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/railroad-boiler-restored-stove-coal-burner-rare I have contacted the Milan Historical Society for dates of plant manufacturing and will advise on the reply. Any other info will be appreciated.

They usually didn't have feet. They were typically designed to sit on a dirt floor in a basement, no feet needed. The one you show in your link above is not so common. It will be difficult to find feet for it. Might be easiest to fabricate some up.

The oval to round can be done usually by just "squishing" a round pipe to fit. If that doesn't work, they can be made up at a sheet metal shop. I'm guessing that's what you mean by a flue adaptor.

How long do the fire on a load of coal? I spent a few weeks in the Aussie outback in '95 and had wood fired HW ran it twice a day shower in the morning and either shower or wash up in the evening. Seemed like a good deal as burned hot a couple of hours then let it go to coals and burn out. made very little fine ash easy to clean when needed. I only run the hot water in my house as needed as well no sense having gallons of hot water in the middle of the night. an hour in the am and an hour in the pm then off. Saves a ton of cash to be candid. In retrospect the real buys if I knew then what I know now would be an old house would be a converted coal boiler that was common enough to still find parts and was gravity / convection fed cast iron radiators that every throws out in the last 30 years and replaced the boiler. Hand fed with a 5 ton coal bin it would have been a superstar.
