Are all solid fuel stoves supposed to run in the .04-.06 range?

A friend of mine has a Fire Chief FC1100 wood/coal furnace and he doesn't seem to be able to run it below "inferno".

I haven't seen the gage, but he claims it's reading "18".

Maybe he means 1.8?

I'm trying to diagnose this through text message so details are sketchy.

Problem is, he's burning wood right now and I don't know if the draft reading is the same for coal. I'm trying to get him to just make the switch but he gets wood free from his 4+ acres of land.

Is he using a manual pipe damper? What kind of gauge is he using to measure the draft?

Ahhhh ... that will make a huge difference. Your looking at about a 500° minimum stack temp difference. Over .10 isn't out of the question with wood.

Coal will be a tough sell with free fuel available ....

The FC1100 furnace has FD (forced draft) fan according to their website. That could be why the draft is so high.

His manometer is the Dwyer Mk II so I knew an "18" seem unreal. But he confirmed it was "1.8"

He is running a manual pipe damper, closed down to about 45* to the pipe. Chimney is at least 25' of flexible stainless inside a masonry chimney that is in the center of the house.

He is not running the forced draft fan.

I told him to try to get it closer to 1 or he was going to clear out his land in one season. :D
