I won the genetic lottery at birth, so I was blessed with being short, asthmatic & allergic to everything under the sun. Never had any problems related to coal burning.

i want to add something here that may or may not be true or apply. And I don't want to scare anybody over something thats probably nothing. I work in a steel plant. Around Coke and red hot steel too. Im not near the hottest or coldest steel. usually around 1900 -2000 F. Its known fact here that glowing coke and steel gives off radiation. Alpha rays, Gamma rays or something like that. General consensus is youre not susposed to stare at the stuff. An d if you do it your eyes get irritated sometimes. if you have a skin fungus or ringworm, or related issue. You can knock it back or kill it from the radiation if you can get near the heat without burning up. I like the heat in my face too, And I don't know how much radiation comes from coal stoves. If any. But in a steel plant there's loss of vision after a very long time in there staring at red coke and steel Without having glass between you to stop the radiation.

Yeah if you stare at super bright light you'll get flash burn -- feels like sand in your eyes -- NOT fun. Usually get that from welding without a mask.
I don't think a stove's intensity is that bright (plus your not looking at it for a 12 hour shift) ...... if it is, your going to have bigger problems!

I thought about the radiation too, as my DVC-500 came with a TINTED, slightly yellow, glass. It DOES dull the intensity of the light radiating from the fire, into the room.
Hey Smitty, scratchy eyes from Welding without face shield. Been there Just closing your eyelids doesn't help. Gotta turn your head. Then you get the Half-face tan

lol, Angry eyes!! I'll chime in too, my wife has all kind of allergies and our stove doesnt bother her at all either. I am however very careful when I shake, load, and dispose my ash. I will usually carry my ash bucket to the street and then dump the ash in. I used to dump right by the front door, but some of the ash always made its way inside.

We all have allergies and we've never had an increase in them due to the coal stove. That's been 3 years and during that time I wasn't particularly careful with my flyash control either. Truly, I could have grown corn in the flyash. Take care, Lisa
Well, Im happy to report that my eyes are all good now. I had this problem the day after I lit the stove and it went away about 3 says later. It definitely had something to do with that initial lighting, but I'll never know for sure what exactly caused it. Maybe being too close to the stove (for 3 hours) had something to do with it...

Had a short problem with humidity in the house. The wife and daughter had irritated eyes and humidity was 37-40%. Problem went away when I fixed the issue with the humidifier. Humidity now 43%-46%. Seems to make a difference for some, never bothered me though.
