Can anyone tell me how is the hopper on the Hitzer model 50-93 attached to the stove. I currently have an old Hearth Mate front load wood coal combo that I have been burning both wood (spring and fall) and coal for the last 20 years. I am getting lazy in my old age and would like to have a hopper for loading coal during the cold weather. I know the Hitzer 30-95 has a removable hopper, but the stove may be a little to small for my house. I was also looking at the Alaska model Kodiac that is not sold as a combo, but the hopper is only held in with four bolts from the top. It looks like a nice stove, but more expensive and probably bigger than I need. Thanks,

New to the 50-93 this year, the hopper is now removable. One bolt and it slides right out the door.

So will this mean the unit will burn larger wood pieces? Whats the idea behind it?

Rex, These are coal stoves, not wood stoves. It means you can burn bituminous(soft) coal. Oh, and by the way; Yes, you can fit a bigger piece of wood.

Thanks to all. I am about 90% sold ont he Hitzer now that the lower section of the hopper is removable. I also checked that out with the factory. If anyone had a picture of the stove with the door open. I would appreciate a look. Even an older one with the hopper in. Thanks for the posts.

Had a 50-93 for one winter in Cleveland. Nice stove. The design is not as sound as some though. Firebox is too spread out. Anthracite likes to be stacked up in a high narrow box according to all the research. Ash would form around the edges and it did not shake down well. Sold it. Decided for my next stove on a DS Machine New Style Champion. It has a 16 x 16 fire box with a removable hopper so you can burn wood in a pinch. Its 90K BTU and only about $1400. With the Hitzer I had modify things to get a good seal in various places. The Keystoker HF is a real nice stove, but the firebox is too small for wood, so the DS is the best compromise.

The new 50-93 has a removable hopper also the hopper is now wider allowing the coal to flow more evenly out to edges of the firebrick.
