While down visiting friends in Quakertown we took a little hop over to Gordonville to check out DS Machine Stoves!
Ended up having them forklift the DS Basement Stove # 4 New Style Champion stove into the back of the truck!
No time like the summer with 95* temps to buy a coal stove.
That is the problem with having an empty pickup.
Got a good look at all the stoves they make...solid!
Had a Harman MK II but the fan noise was a bit much in the living room...
The plan is to put the DS in the basement with a hood, a grill above it and cold air returns to get some nice natural convection...
Hopefully without any fans!
The extra heat output, almost double, of 130,000 BTU should make the cold and windy days a better experience.
The DS has thermostatic regulator and a hopper like a Hitzer.
Big firebox with rocker grates like a Harman MK.
Once it gets unloaded I will get a few measurements and figure how to get the DHW coils to fit around the hopper!
Have to get some slings for the stove to hoist it into the basement too.
I will get some pictures posted once it is off the truck and unwrapped.

I am looking forward to this too. That is alot of btu's. They do seem to be the largest of the handfired right now, and am curious to see how they actually perform.

I had been looking for a bigger hand fired stove for awhile...
But most topped out at about 90-96k btu.
I want to do DHW also.
Hitzer was close, but I still want to see the flames even in the basement.
Did some internet research, then while we were in PA to see some friends went to Gordonville to look at them up close.
They had the 'right' color and there was space in the truck...
Done deal!
I was actually planning on doing a sampler run up to the breakers...
Hit 4-5 breakers for about 300lbs each and see which I liked the most...
Before committing to a larger buy.

Ok, my big question is, are you going to run nut, or stove through it?
It is easy to run stove through a hitzer 82, and with that even being bigger, so I would assume that would be the size, unless the hopper is for nut.
Also I take it the hopper is top feed so you couldn't build a cabinet around it, and that is why more of a "hood" approach to heat collection?

D.S. Machine Stove
Photos from another install but this gives you the idea of how the hood works.
Wish I had that ceiling height!
I should not have to run Stove due to the increased output of the DS over the Harman...
The hopper will pass the Stove size coal, the outlet is big.
The front door is available to load coal also as the hopper does not block the door.
Nut is the preferred sized for me!

Do these have the bi-metal thermostats, like the hitzers? I ran stove coal and it didnt necessarily give me alot more heat because when you set the stove to a number, it holds the temperature with the thermostat. For example, if you want 350* stove it may be a number 9 on the dial thermostat with nut, but say a number 8 with stove coal, not alot of difference.
What it did help with is ash clogging you coal bed. Ash goes through you coal bed to the pan easier with stove coal I think, because of the bigger gaps between pieces of coal, and you get less dead spots. I decided to try this because getting into all the nooks and crannies to get the ash cleaned out and keep the whole box burning gets tricky with reaching into the back, and trying to poke slice the bed from the top and bottom.

Bi-Metal thermostat, yes.
Big ash pan, yes.
The cast iron grates are like the rockers in the Harman, quite aggressive...
I never had any issues with the Harman grates, although you can dump the fire easily if you do not have the touch...
Never had issues with clogging grates from the Harman...
I hope this is true with the DS also.
I like the extra 34,000 BTU of the Basement #4...
Over the Hitzer 82
I want to squeeze a DHW coil, or two, on each side of the stove...
Measure twice!

Well it got cold too soon and September was too busy...
The stove is making its trek from storage...
Thanks Weldy
To its new home...
In the basement...
After some demo of the old fireplace...
What was left of it...

Six hours later...
The block is down...
But not out of the basement yet!
Soon it will be time to hoist the stove down below...

Thats how we got mine in the basement, Built a 4x4 frame on the top of stairway to the basement. Removed 3 steps and lowered down in with a chain hoist. I believe that your stove is closer to 600lbs my #3 is about 420 or so. Best of luck with it. Mine is keeping my place at 73 with the air inlet on 2 1/2.
