Harman, Hitzer & Baker is what I found so far. Anyone else to add to the list of coal insert manufactures?

Call or E mail either one of these dealers for D.S. Machine Stoves I believe they would make one for you just give them
the size your looking for . Keystoker did make a insert not sure if they still do call them .
Gibraltor Stoves also made two inserts CFI & DDI you might be able to find a used one on the Craigslist The Paper shop or ebay . Either one of the ones you Picked will do the Job D.S. Machine Stoves Hitzer or Baker would be my Pick
Good luck on the hunt for a Insert .

An insert usually means a SS liner is also installed...
Cleaning a SS liner of creosote sucks and will usually result in a short liner life.
Just burn coal in an insert with a SS liner.
Burn Wood in a stove hooked to a clay liner chimney or Metalbestos type metal chimney.
The hopper is removable on the Hitzer 503 so you could burn wood.
The hitzer 983 is huge and has no hopper so it could burn wood also.

I thought a clay liner chimney was ideal for coal since the sulfur didn't eat away at it...

Yes clay is best all 'round.
Inserts are in fireplaces...
fireplaces have large flues...
usually more than 3 times the area of a 6" outlet on the insert...
hence the need for a liner.
but creosote gets stuck in the nooks and is difficult to clean...
so burning wood in an insert is not a good idea.

I talked to a few dealers and they all are saying wood inserts use SS liners.

Yes they use them...
Look inside one...
Then think of how the creosote would buildup in the valleys...
Fuel for the chimney fire...
How about aggressive brushing action to clean the liner...
Burn Coal...
Be safe...
