I've been visiting the forum for about a month and am so addicted I needed to register. I also decided to go from a pellet stove to a hopper feed coal stove. I put a deposit on a Ashland EZ-50 from a local Amish store. It looks like a Hitzer but it isn't. Has anyone heard of these stoves or is it a northwest PA thing? :shifty: Any input would be great! Thanks!

I have the same stove. I have only used it a little over one season and I would not switch back to wood. I think it was a great buy for the money and would do it again. I think I got it at the same place you are getting yours from. Great people also.

Schwartz's in Conneautville is the store. They are excellent! I'm still paying on it so I'll pick it up when I'm done. The model they have burning in their store is impressive, that's why I decided to go for their brand. Do you get your coal from the same place? I found a place in Ohio about an hour's drive away for $40 a pallet less. Same brand, Blaschak, so I'll probably get it from there. Thanks for the reply! Now I'm even more excited to get the stove! Just not excited about the weather  I'll be using it in.

Yes that is the place. I have a floor display. Been using it since Jan o8. I do not get my coal from him. I get it bulk from a amish guy in linesville, he also sells in bags , super guy, better prices. Also sells the hiltzer stoves there.

Is it nut coal? Does he have a phone to contact him? Do you know what brand and prices? I might look into getting coal from him. Thanks!

Yes he has nut in bulk. He has nut, pea, and rice in bags. I just paid 230 for bulk, the bags are 260 a ton. He is Amish, no phone. He loads the bulk by hand with buckets or puts it in empty feed bags for you. Same brand bulk or bags. Blaschak.

Thanks for the information! Could you send me his address or directions sometime? I'd like to pay him a visit. How is your stove installed? I'm planning on putting mine in the basement and letting the heat rise naturally. I don't know if I'll rig it into the ductwork yet or not. I did that with my pellet stove at the old house and it worked fairly well.

I sent you a pm with address and some directions. My stove is in the livingroom in front of the fireplace. Much more heat than the fireplace and more control. Heats the whole place nice. Ceiling fan by stove does great. I use about a five gallon bucket a day when it gets about 20 or lower. It took a little learning to get use to the stove, but works great now.

Sounds great! As soon as I sell my pellet stove I'll get some coal. I think I'll get bags this year and maybe plan for bulk next year. As long as the bulk is fairly clean.

Fred,

Think it's a "faux" Hitzer 50/93. Called an Ashland EZ-50, it's a direct knockoff of your Hitzer.

Hand Fed Coal Stove: coal-ez 50

Post by guyf2000 » Sat. Dec. 13, 2014 12:36 am

I realize this thread is old but I thought I'd update the information should anyone be interested in the Coal-Ez stoves or need parts. I drove there while in that area to get a new grate and glass for my EZ-50.

Schrocks Stoves is still in business near Ashland Ohio. 1050 SR 545, Ashland Ohio. Not a huge operation at all.

I saw an EZ-100 (100,000 BTU/hr) and two EZ-250s (smaller than the EZ-50) in the office for sale. They said the EZ-250 would heat about 1000 sq.ft. They also still make the EZ-50 (50000 or 75000 btu/hr). One fellow mentioned the EZ-50 has some minor improvements but is pretty much what it used to be. If you do need replacement parts, note the date of manufacture and serial number. At least one model stove changed from a single grate to a dual grate. They might be able to figure which by the manufacturing date.

Still no phone as far as I know. They close at 2pm on Saturdays. Not sure about weekdays.

My replacement grate was $52 and glass was $44.

Old thread…
Personally, I think these stoves are very nice looking compared to others. I also like their grates, deep square fire bed, tall firebox, reburn system for coal and wood gasses, and thermostat location…which in my opinion happens to be the best spot…and it’s a hopper stove…and their prices are awesome.
