No smoke at all. All modern top loaders are designed so that the exhaust is being drawn up into the chimney (behind the load door) & not venting out of the load doors. (That's one reason for refreshing the fire. It will increase the draft & when you open the load doors (either front or top) the air will be sucked INTO the stove, not out. If you watch the video , you'll notice when I open the top load door the fire actually brightens with more oxygen. (think of your stove as being connected to a vacuum hose (chimney) which is constantly sucking air out of your stove. Most of the time, the only way it can get air is through the coal bed itself but if you open a load door, it now has an easier source of air to suck on than the coal bed so it'll pull air into the stove through there. If your vacuum hose (chimney) is sucking too hard, you'll have too much air being pulled out of your stove & thus a barometric damper helps to relieve that suction by giving the chimney & easier source of room air to pull on)
Of course, you don't want to leave any load door open too long or it will kill your draft (less air being pulled through the coal bed- reducing heat going up the chimney -reducing draft) & could allow smoke & CO into your house once the draft is weakened. Load doors are usually closed in a pretty short order.

Hey, I think I bought some weed from that guy in 1975! Time flies doesn't it? My oldest will be 27 this summer. Heck, I only feel about 27. Ok, some days I feel more like 72.

Hadn't thought of a Spring cleanup video Jack as I don't do all that much except cleanout the ash, dismantle the stove pipes, dump out any fly ash & seal the thimble hole for the summer. Not much of interest to video.
I was planning on doing a "Lighting a hand fired coal fire" next Fall however. I think between lighting a stove & shaking down, that just about covers most problem areas that people post about.

I'm always open to suggestions though & it was fun to do! (that video also scared the Hell out of me to get back into shape!! ......& I'm also going to let the hair that now grows readily... in my ears...grow long & see if I can do a "Comb-Over" with it!)

Seriously, I want to thank you along with the others on this forum for patience shown me with my dumb questions about coal burning , stove pipe etc. I appreciated the help getting started with a fire and keeping me going thru the season with tending ,shaking down and poking my fire. I am truly grateful to all. A special thanks to you Devil for the tips and improvements on a stove make and model we both share.

You are very brave and a terrific member of this community!!!!!!!!!!!!! This video is wonderful. It addresses most of what new coal burners need to know about this stove. In the beginning I used to count the number of times I shook the handle trying to use a standard amount to achieve more consistent results. Now I do it more on looks. However, there is no way I would leave the ash door open while shaking. somehow the ash flys out into the room if I do it that was. I guess each situation is different. I love the look of your brick!

When my dealer replaced my glass the service tech greased the TLC hinges and they have not ridden up or displaced since. This is now 7 weeks without a hinge pin out of place. I called the dealer today to ask what they used. It seems to at least help if not fix the problem. They will get back to me and I will let you know what they used.
