Dust in Blower Inlet- Pre-Filter?

Just felt a little less airflow coming out of the Mark II blower, saw that there were strings of dust in the wire grate inlet, took these out and we're back to normal. I constantly have to remind myself of these little maintenance things. One time the dust was imbedded in the wheel, cleaned that as well.
Any ideas out there regarding some sort of blower pre-filter?

Yeah, I also noticed that on my DVC-500 as well. No filter for the blower, and it really builds up dust on the "squirrel cage". I was thinking of cutting a piece of furnace filter to fit over the opening.

Take the ring off that holds the wire mesh on. Place a piece of AC filter under the ring and on top of the mesh. Easy to keep clean with a vacuum or damp thumb.

Yep, Great Idea. Unfortuneately, the DVC500's blower does not have any screening, just a wide open hole. I'm going to have to create my own ring, held in place by a couple butterfly-topped bolts.
Easy to play with this summer.

Oops---sorry. It shouldn't be too difficult to make up some kind of fixture to hold the filter.

we used to get cat hair caught in the pre-screen on the convection blower all the time.

My FireplaceXtrordinaire has a huge pre-filter. Almost 1 sq ft. Yeah, it traps unbelievable amounts of dirt, dust, and most of all... dog hair and wood chips. I clean it once a month. Just goes to show, no matter how much you vacuum to keep the floor clean in front of stove, theres always some ash/dirt/hair that gets pulled in before it even has a chance to settle to the floor.

Also take your blower off and look at the curved vanes of the squirrel cage fan. They will also be full of $hit. Take the fan off and use a brush and or an air compressor and clean it off. Makes the fan noisy and less effective.

Thats true. Lets see..... my DVC-500 has now officially been running for 1 month. Already pulled fan out of distribution blower, due to built up dust. I just used high press air (240psi) to clean mine. These things should be built with a pre-filter.
