Got to Make a New Chimney

Hi Guys,
I lucked out and bought a Chubby coal stove from Craig's list with Joe in NH's help. It's going in the shop so I can work out there during the winter months. So, I got to build a chimney. I'm curious about the height, I've read here that you guys say the minimum height needs to be 15'. Is that from the floor or from the flue pipe collar on the stove? I plan to go straight up through the roof with a 6" pipe. I have a 8'6" ceiling then about 2' of attic area before going through the roof. I know about the 10'-2' rule. I will frame a wood chimney about 18" square above the roof line and line it with cement board and fill it full with fiberglass insulation for fireproofing and to help keep the flue pipe warm. I would very much appreciate your thoughts on my plan.

Jeff

Go 20' thimble to the top if you can.

I too have read 15 foot chimney. That is about what mine is in the house. There are many many chimney's around that are less than 15 feet. Lots of ranch style houses, with a stove in living quarters, and only 8 foot chimney's. My shop has an 8 foot chimney, with lots of draw. Actually, I have about 7 or 8 foot from the stove, straight up to the chimney, and then 8 foot of chimney. In that case, I'm going to say I have 15 foot or so of chimney (including stove pipe) in my shop also. With this way of thinking, that changes my house chimney draw to about 21 feet straight up (including pipe). You should be fine.

Thanks, coaledsweat and oliver power, I was thinking that if I only have one 90* elbow out of the back of the stove and then straight up with 6" pipe all the way it should draw ok. I suppose if it doesn't it wouldn't be that difficult to add on. Appreciate the comments.

The 90* elbow will work, but, I use a "T" instead. With a "T" , you would have a place for fly ash to go, and not be restricting the 90*. Kind of like a drop legg on a gas/air line.

Your right oliver power, I misstated, already have the T and cap. Also going to change the flue pipe on the Harman running the house with a T and cap as well, just waiting for warmer weather. Thanks for the heads-up.
