Normally 90 lbs. a day with the two stoves - heating 3000+ sq ft of a 6000 sq ft uninsulated Victorian.
When it gets down below zero, like recently, that goes up to about 110 lbs. a day and the electric furnace kicks-in occasionally to help.
It's -15F right now and all three are going.

I'm heating 3400 square feet of house with Kaa-2 boiler. (1700 un-insulated block basement, & 1700 up in house). Thermostats set at 74*. House is 74*.
800 square foot pole barn shop with not so good insulation. Heating with Hitzer 254. Using about 30 - 35 pounds every 24 hours. Keeping temps in the 60's.

My outdoor thermometers are near heat-leaky windows and the colder it gets the faster they lose heat. So, they tend to read higher than actual outdoor air temps more so as the temps get lower.
Before going to bed, I stuck the IR gun out the back door and it said it was -31F on the BBQ cover.
Opened the dampers a bit more on both stoves. This morning they were still working hard but keeping the house warm. I'm guessing that was about 120 lbs. the last 24 hours.

7F this morning...didn’t even ad 12lbs this morning, so I’d say I’m closer to 35lbs/24hr.

I like these Rubber-meets-the-road kind of posts.
We can predict, calculate, and even measure, but home heating is not a linear process.
We find holes in our plans and learn from what others are finding.
For instance, I am finding I either need to increase my radiation in the living room or more insulation. Since I currently have exposed rim joists and unsealed outlets that penetrate my 2 in foam layer, I know where to start.
Then systemically, I need to finish a few areas that stalled due to life events and get things finished sealing up.
Keep posting your results, fellas!

I am pretty sure I could reduce my coal usage a little if I had a small base burner in the sitting room. This would reduce the load on the kitchen range. I work for a inside temp of of 23 to 24 celcius or ~74F in the sitting room which is the the draftiest room the house.
At $440 a ton USD for Blaschak in Ontario, i can tolerate any reduction in usage.

You are almost to the point where you could save your summer heat and not burn any fuel in winter.oliver power wrote: ↑Wed. Jan. 26, 2022 9:13 pmI'm heating 3400 square feet of house with Kaa-2 boiler. (1700 un-insulated block basement, & 1700 up in house). Thermostats set at 74*. House is 74*.

1300 sq ft most the time, 900 if real cold at night. 1878 house that leaks some. A week of mostly -0 to -20 and 50ish pounds a day average (a guess). I used 3 pails the coldest day. Im sure Im still under 40 a day for the year.

The Harman is in the basement. At the beginning of the season I started with 2 pallets, 1.2 tons each, of Blaschak nut coal. From when I started in in late November the first pallet went in 8 weeks, about a 40 pound bag a day. Since the really cold temps arrived I’ve been burning 50 to 60 pounds a day. On 1 really cold day I went thru 80. I’ve gone thru less than 150 gallons of oil during since the stove was lit.
We’ve decided to add a second stove for next year. It will have to be an insert to fit in the fireplace. Probably a Hitzer 503, everyone seems happy that uses them. I’d love to find a vintage parlor stove but haven’t found one that would fit.

I have averaged 100 lbs per day over the last 16 days through the EFM. I don’t keep track of the Chubby JR, but a rough guess would be 50 lbs every 3 days.
