Miners lightsBull dog Lamps
I do not have dates on the following .First miners drove a pointed candle holder into the mine timber to give them light to work .Next came the small light that held whale oil .It looks like a small tea kettle .This fit into the miner s hat .Note the first hats Were soft like a baseball hat .Next came the Carbide Lamp/. You insert Carbide Pellets and water in the Brass Lamp .This mix creates a gas similar to a welders flame .Note All Three lamps were very poor to light up the miner work area .All three were Open Flame Lights and if Methane Gas Was near You Had An Explosion .After Many Mine Explosions and Deaths Thomas Edison Designed the Battery Lamp now used .This Fit On a Belt Around Your hips Battery on waste and Light with a cord fit on your hard hat .These the first year were called Bulldog Lampswhy .Because initially the lamps leaked acid from the battery And Burned your pants at the hip .Im going to take some pics of the lamps .jack

Thanx for this one,Jack! You've placed it right where it belongs! It's hard to fathom an open flame in an underground mine! Back in the day, they used em',or they didn't provide food and shelter for their Loved Ones. Rough way to go when Methane hit em'..
Take Care Jack, and keep em' coming!
