Circa 1952 L C N now Lehigh ant .would close in 2 years .A new effort was started to increase coal production .It was called Long Hole Drilling .A miner and buddy would fire 6 shots which blew down 5 or more feet of coal .After this coal was loaded there was no a hole in the strata .Next the miners added another section of Drill Bit .Like adding a section of fishing rod .The miners fired the vein filling part of the empty void which the coal had been removed .The procedure followed in a 180 degree fan system of adding more drill bits to the first jack hammer .So from right to left the 2 miners added more drill bits and kept blowing down more coal .No longer were the 2 miners timbering every 5 feet to support the chute chamber .Its was hoped to drill into the vein over 100 plus feet .verically .It did work but Also at Times The drill Bit wandered From The proposed angle of intent .Ingersol Rand came up with Stronger Drill Bits but soon 1954 L C N shut down with major financial problems .this new idea was far safer for the miners no timbering no climbing up the chute work tunnel which in our area had Had Veins Running 55 degrees to vertical .ive been in A 65 degree pitch Its Scary .jack

Great information, Jack! What was the Lehigh operation known as next after the LC&N closed down in 1954? I burned mostly Lehigh from about early 80's to early 2000's. My coal people just called it Greenwood breaker. I don't recall what was on the weigh slips in that time. Maybe Old Co. Lehigh?

I am working for a couple that originated in the West Virginia coal country. Late 70's age wise. I moved an old trunk that I recognized as a tool box of an old craftsman from their porch before I demolished it. It was full of old tools I have and other things from the past. One of the items was her fathers carbide light from the mines in WV. The tool box was his grandfathers. How about a story about the lights they used in the deep Jack.
