Plug Christian Abraham into a search engine to see all of his photos of anthracite mines in operation. I think the pictures are about fifteen years old and I'm not sure how many of them are still in operation. Can't remember how to access his website, however. Near as I can tell, all were independent miners. Bootleg miners? Probably, but worth looking at all of the photos. Some of those coal seams were huge. Others make you wonder if they were worth mining.

Another good site is www.undergroundminers.com All about abandoned coal mines. Lots of pictures. They got shut down by the feds since entering an abandoned coal mine is illegal. They warned you to stay out of mines, but the pictures made anyone stupid enough want to go into them.
