My grandfather was a coal miner. I am from Alabama, and he made whiskey in the summer and in the winter he worked in the mines in north Alabama that fed the blast furnaces of Birmingham. I have never been in a mine, but there must be a place to tour one in northern PA. Anybody know of one?

Look up the No. 9 Mine and Museum, and the Pioneer Tunnel. Both have mine tours and a nice museum.

There is the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour in North Eastern Pa. Also the Steamtown Historic site in Scranton. The coalmine tour also has an elaborate museum. Steam Town has trains and trainrides. They are only 15 minutes from each other and just off I-81 in Scranton.

I've been to both and would recommend them to anyone interested.
