I read a book about Centralia a while ago. I believe it said that the fire draws air through abandoned mine workings.

Sorry to bring back an old thread. Not sure if anyone has interest in talking about Centralia.
But my question is how the heck dose this fire stay lit under ground with no air? And for all these years?
And at times we find it difficult to burn coal in an appliance built specially for doing so. :?

I would imagine also that as the coal burns to ash, it creates room for combustion air to move in, maybe?

I ride through Centralia at least twice a summer on the way to Cherry Springs. If the fire is still burning, it's not obvious from route 61. No steam or smell that I could detect.

I dirtbike ride and atv ride there, there is no underground fire anymore, a buddy of mine said his friend got the mineral rights and there suppose to tear up graffiti high way old 61 should be interesting to see how the people react. There is no smoke or heat from anywhere i found and i road a cupple of the new mines and found some hole from where they mined years ago
