Number of Miners and Fatal Accidents in 1909

A snippet in today's paper. Number of miners in 1909 171,795. Number of fatal accidents 567. Try to imagine that many people pulling coal out of the ground for 1 year. Now think how much of a void is underneath the region.

One long wall machine probably does as much if not more than all those miners, & it collaspes the mine behind it, they now leave very little if any roof support. Those poor souls were working mostly by hand & for the most part barely making a living.

I think the supports here are timber. They last pretty long if kept under water but everything has it's limits. When you spend some time in the bush around here you tend to look down quite a bit, at least I do. Saved me on three occasions that I can remember.
