Medium roast Private Selection in the pot tonight. Help yourself.
Nice and sunny here today high of 52. Calling for 70’s+ Thursday.
Daffodils and Tulips are up 4”-6”. Maples are budding out in town. Seeing buds on Japanese honeysuckle which is usually first to leaf out and last to lose them.
Got a couple spare tire carriers for my trailer today, so I’ll need to install those. Got rid of some scrap metal too. Also spread some grass seed over the yard. Need at least one more freeze to open up the ground a bit for the seed.
Getting the walleye itch.

Our dozen girls hadn’t laid any eggs hardly in months. I finally got fed up with them and we had a come to Jesus meeting 2 weeks ago.
I told them, “girls it’s either eggs or dumplings, so take your pick “.
Got 10 eggs today. No kidding!
Awe…truth is it was that TSC chicken feed. We noticed it months ago they quit laying. Swapped TSC feeds and nothing happened.
Then I seen some videos on YouTube about a problem with Purina chicken feeds from TSC. Looked at a few more videos…sure enough same problem mentioned.
So I told my son about the videos and we decided to switch feeds two weeks ago, getting feed from local co-op. Bingo! Birds are laying again.
Kalmbach feed is what we’re feeding now. Birds have went from 0 eggs to 8-10 a day for 12 birds and the darkest orange yolks we’ve seen.
Thing is, it was the two cheapest feeds at TSC that they said was the problem…NEITHER of which were what we bought at TSC. We bought the high dollar Purina feed from TSC…but the also make the Dumore brand that was part of the problem.
In our estimation the high dollar feed had an issue as well, but wasn’t included in the videos.

Are you getting that storm yet? It's supposed to start here around 3pm tomorrow. We have 2 local farm feed mills. When I get asked to pick up feed, that's where I go. My wife always gets the etc layer crumbles. Now that you have mentioned it, I recall wondering why the egg production varied so much. I guess I now know the answer.

I am enjoying a cold Labatt and watching the Canadians/Devils game. Fast moving snow squall just went through here, it melted and has now turned ice. We are supposed to get 4-8” of snow early Thursday, I will keep you guys posted.
That is good news that the strike is over in the hen house.

Im supposed to get 12" which is better than the 20" they predicted this morning. Snow is fine but the wind is supposed to be 40MPH. -10 on Friday morning. Yuck! I was hoping I'd miss out on the storms this winter. Im jealous of plants coming out of the ground in February! I dont see it much in March here and then it will freeze them off.
So give me some of everything! Im still trying to fatten up for moving snow Friday
Interesting about the feed Hoyt. We used to get ours at a farmers coop. Feed is misleading. Example for canines, some say (as an example) 25% protein but you have to really read the ingredients to see what kind of protein. Im sure chicken food works the same. Shame on Purina.

TSC Purina feed at TSC was costing us $25 for 40lbs and lasted 1.5 weeks. 12-18 eggs per week.
Was thinking these new birds from a new baby chick supplier weren’t producing as good as from the last supplier which was a different supplier. We were blaming it on “their” breeding.
TSC Dumore feed $19 for 40lbs and lasted 1.5 weeks. Zero eggs per week (0 for about 2 months).
Kept thinking these birds are beautiful and healthy looking but not producing.
Couldn’t figure it out for at least 3 months prior to seeing video…
Switched the feed…
Been on this new feed for two weeks now.
This co-op Kalmbach feed costs $21 for 50lbs and lasts 2.5 weeks. 42+ eggs per week and climbing. Got 10 eggs yesterday from 12 birds.

There must be a ton of research done on various feeds/nutrition and egg production output.Hoytman wrote: ↑Tue. Feb. 21, 2023 10:24 pmTSC Purina feed at TSC was costing us $25 for 40lbs and lasted 1.5 weeks. 12-18 eggs per week.

And I would guess that the amount of variables with egg production is well beyond simply feed as well.
Farming is as much a science as an art I would assume.
