https://www.uhaul.com/Truck-Rentals/15ft-Moving-Truck/

Looks like one could haul 3 tons with the 15 foot truck.

It gets 10 MPG.

So a 500 mile trip might cost 500 mi/10 mpg * $3/gal = $150 for the 3 tons

Doing so to get bit v. anthracite might make it an economical thing to do.

Anyone done this ?

One problem. going to have to shovel it in and out of the box truck. Most breakers load from overhead with water. Only one I know of that loads with a bobcat and iirc they are one of the $350+ a ton breakers. I thought of renting a dump trailer but have to set up the truck for renting a trailer and i suck at backing trailers!

$3 fuel is ambitious. PA notoriously has expensive gasoline. Have to pay something to rent the truck and the scare insurance. Are any of the routs toll roads? I bet loaded with 3 ton you won't get 10mpg. When all is said and done probably cheaper and less hassle to just get some locally.

So, a recommendation to haul a barrel of lower cost, non-Penn. gas inside the truck to save $$

That's what it cost here. no discounts on bagged coal, never were. when I lived in coal country (2005-2017) the hardware stores were getting $5.50 a bag

If you're wanting bagged on a pallet maybe look into having a place like Fastenal do a backhaul. I understand (but have no experience with) some places like that will haul stuff instead of running a half empty truck to a store.
It seems to me that if you haul any distance yourself (rental unit or not) 3 ton is about the minimum amount to make it worth while, at least for bulk, it might break down a little better for bagged.

When I looked at hauling bagged Rice Anthracite Coal from Kimmels
5 years ago bringing up 10-12 tons for myself and a friend using a
local Hertz stake rack with a drop gate the roundtrip cost for gas,
mileage and insurance would have only saved $50.00.

Buying in bulk from a coal dealer that receives coal by the carload saves
money in any case. We used to have a local coal yard that received by
rail but that was before coal gas and gas from the south made its appearance.

You know now that I think about it, it was the local enterprise outlet that I checked
with as they have access to everything up to tractors and semi-trailers.

Happy New Year
