Entering a war zone as combatant and a citizen from different country is probably not a wise thing to do. Only briefly read the article but it appears they joined some sort of force sanctioned by Ukraine. Nonetheless I would assume they are technically mercenaries and as such Geneva Convention protections would not apply.

Yup!
And all-to-often in wars the Geneva Convention gets ignored..... by both sides.

We briefly covered the Geneva Convention in a basic training class, after they explained why the oath of service was changed to, "follow lawful orders", after the My Lai incident. I'd like to think it made a difference.

The category of mercenary is very narrow: https://guide-humanitarian-law.org/content/articl ... rcenaries/ so it is questionable if they would qualify as mercenaries, since they need to meet all six criteria. Including a promise of a large amount of compensation.

And even if they were mercenaries, international law still requires they be given humane treatment while in custody, even if denied POW status. It would not give Russia carte blanche to torture them.

A person doesn’t have to be a member here just to “look around”. I lurked for a few years before joining and learned plenty about burning coal and all things related.

I also learned that most here are a good group of people, which prompted me to go ahead and join. Going to a “forum get-together” and actually meeting members proved my original assumptions correct about many of the members being genuinely good folks.

Good, honest, hard work, sometimes blunt, straight shooters here, but also comical and very kind and extremely helpful in many ways. Most tend to stick around too.

Welcome to the forum since I missed your first post. You here to stay, or just be a “Random” poster? Any questions about coal, or coal stoves? You’re welcome to stay if you like.
