They change the layout on the idea of keeping you in there longer and maybe buying more!

For me that works in reverse.

I get fed up and skip some of the hard to find items on my list.

And, I noticed that a while ago, those working the registers stopped asking. "Did I find everything today ? " Guess they couldn't take all the rants and sarcastic answers they likely got.

I have gotten to the point that I would rather buy something online than from a brick and mortar place that has zero knowledge or service.

With that said, My mom and dad recently got a new TV. I pointed them to a local independent shop. The owner went over all of the options with them, listened to their concerns, etc. They picked a new Samsung out, and the owner installed it for them. Nice job on the cables, entered all of their credentials for the apps, adjusted the picture and sound, etc. That type of service is not free, but they were very happy with the results.

You come in the store I work you'll get knowledgeable service. I had a lady the other day looking for paint remover, asked her what for and she says for her deck.... suggested power washing and quick sanding at most. Lost a sale but gained confidence. Didn't even have a power washer in stock to sell her. :x

I don't know how much faith I have in local places anymore as far as buying appliances. My brother bought a TV from local shop once and he had warranty issue. Ended up the TV was bought at Wal-Mart.

It's difficult for small stores to compete as the prices they pay for large ticket items are not much off suggested list. $1000 snowblower nets you $100 profit before figuring in expenses.
