Points suck... especially if they use a ballast resistor. In my years on the farm I never had to touch anything with electronic ignition. Points got the green disease over the winter and never had a great spark even when new. Most MSD stuff I see is for 12 volts though, I’m still 6 volts.

Rob, the main concept with these old things is to keep them as original as possible--as with my Ford 8N (6V, positive ground, points, rotor, condenser, generator, etc.) & all my 1970's Wheel Horses & of course the old 1947 Harley Knucklehead--there are real simplistic solutions to the problems you mentioned. Nothin but a thing!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Points are fine. Worked for decades. Buy new old stock ones made in the USA. Neihoff brand or other made in 70s or 80s as an example. Lots of thicker copper in them. Im not saying electronic isnt better but if you have a lot of trouble with points you just havent figured them out yet or are using junk parts. Yes, they need more attention but they are fine.

That really limits your options then. An aftermarket ignition box doesn't eliminate the points anyway - it just reduces the current going through them so the points last longer, and gives you a much better spark.pintoplumber wrote: ↑Sat. If you set the points up right and keep some spares in the glove box you shouldn't have to walk.

P this might be cure for no 6V electronic conversions.
If memory serves me well pre 68" or so breaker ignitions on cars with 12v batteries had to have a ballast resistor or resistor wire in power to coil, points to drop voltage to 6 volts. So technically a 12 volt electronic system will work. Looked at Mallory, accel, and petronix all require a resistor be in stalled or resistor coil to drop voltage down from 12 volt to 6 volt system if vehicle doesn't have one built in.

What did they call that when we changed to year 2000? I have 2 6 volt cars, I wasn’t going to be stranded.
