A regular visitor at #9 mine told this story of a horrible accident close to Christmas 1949. Frank Horlevick & Joe Adrovith both miners, were being hoisted up the elevators after their shift at #9 mine.
Some 30 feet from the top both were swept off the elevator down the shaft, 900 feet. Harlevick was carrying a 6 foot drill which was snagged in the shaft frame. Note: the mine elevator is opened on both sides. When the drill snagged the Shaft Timber, the elevator was jostled and Horlevick and in desperation grabbed Adroviths leg. Needless to say both were killed by the fall. The Price of Coal, 2 men!
