Here is a small glimpse of what it was like to mine bituminous coal in and round southeastern Kentucky. The youtuber mentions Barbourville, KY and that is very close to where my family is from. He also mentions how young some of the children were that worked in and around the mines, some being as young as 8 and 10 years old picking slate rock out of the coal. My grandpa was born in 1923 and he always told he that he was 7 years old the first time he went into the mines to work with his elder brother. He worked the big veins as well as smaller veins as he got older and eventually got out of the mines and started trucking coal, which is where he made most of his money. He made enough to buy a small farm when he was young, a small farm of about 30-35 acres where they raised corn, beans, taters, maters, and hogs, chickens, and cattle. They didn't have much, but they always had plenty to eat, with 6 children to raise, and enough left over the help relatives nearby and others.

Written and sang by one of my distant relatives, also one of my grandpa's best friends. My grandpa preached his funeral.
This Hurrincane Creek Miners tragedy happened in Hyden, Kentucky.

J.D. was also a WWII veteran. He was a scout and the story is that he was one of the first to land on the beaches of Normandy.
I haven't been able to find out exactly when it happened, but at some point after the war he was invited to sing on the steps of our nations capital a song that he wrote himself called, Thank God for Old Glory. As my mother tells the story, there were many well known country artists invited to sing that day, a couple hundred thousand people watching, and after J.D. finished singing his song it is said that he was the only singer there to get a standing ovation from the crowd. I'm sure this is recored somewhere in our nations archives, but I haven't been able to locate that event.
The man you see in the picture of the video below to the far right wearing the flat cap is my late grandpa who preached J.D.'s funeral, both of them friends for life, and both from Clay County, Manchester Kentucky. As of 2021 my grandpa would be 98 years young.
Here are songs from the entire album J.D. made.
J.D. was from Clay County, KY, a gospel singer who, to my knowledge, produced many gospel albums, and had several gold records to him credit. During his life and career as a singer songwriter he had numbers of songs to his credit. A couple have been recorded by the likes of Ricky Skaggs and others, "Take your Shoes off Moses", and "Six Hours on the Cross" being two of his most popular songs. As far as I know, as of 7-9-21 J.D.'s wife Rosie is still living in Hamilton, Ohio, but I'll check with my mom about that.
