Only about 1/3 of my bill is paying for actual electricity. Is that the going norm?

They add a $20 dollar penalty to my bill monthly because I refuse to let them install a smart meter. I argued with them about it and their defense was the smart meter allows them to get a very accurate reading. I told them the smart meter puts a man out of a job.

My mom let them do it and her bill jumped $75 a month.

Smart meters can cut power remotely. Not a great safety feature.

Not here.

My village is one of only 42 in NYS that has their own power department. We have a contract going back almost 100 years to deal directly with the power generating facility up on the St Lawrence. No added costs for transmission and other stuff, like some areas get stuck with.

Only thing added is in winter when the village exceeds their power allotment under the contract because so many have switched to electric heat being much cheaper than oil or pro-pain. Then there is a variable rate added for "purchased power" from other power plants to make up the overage. Still, that only gets it up to around 10 cents a KWH in the coldest month of the coldest winters. Summer rates are 4 cents a KWH total, while outside the village's power supply area they are 12 cents a KWH.

I just grabbed one of my more recent bills (mid November to mid December) and it's 5.2 cents a KWH total cost for electricity delivered. Of which the base electric rate was 4 cents and the added "purchased power" rate was 1.2 cents. No other charges in connection with electricity. The rest of the bill is sewer and water service.

The low electric rate is one of the selling points for home owners and businesses moving here and why it's not easy to find a house for sale.

i think $33 for the monthly fee, $35-70 for KW's at 12 cents per KW and nowhere to go but up as green takes over.

They changed the meters here a few years ago. But they are only the type that transmits over to the electric department of the KWH used for the monthly utility billing. That freed up the meter reading guy to do other work so they would'nt have to hire additional help.

Same for the water meter.
