I was fortunate to see them 3 times. Nassau County Colosseum in the early 90's. The new arena in Philly mid 90's not too long after they built it and local show at amphitheater near Montage Mountain. They put on an excellent show and each one was about 3 hours.
Was watching a documentary on him, sometime in the 90's he took a year off and relearned how to play the drums. His original style was mostly self taught, a two fisted slam away technique. The new "proper" technique mostly involved how he was holding the sticks and where the drums were placed, the second one is more fluid. Might be one of the reasons for the enormous drum kit, it's actually like two kits and presumably they would each be set up differently for the different styles.
If you watch this clip the mini stage he's on spins and he moves to other side of the kit.

To me,he and his Two Buddies were one of Canada's Best Exports! I was a Young Dude(Sorry for the Mott The Hoople reference) when they broke at the old Cleveland Agora way back in the Early 70's. These Guys were Really Something! They were a Concept Unseen! They Sanitized the Rock Schlok Movement,Bucked the System, and Made Way. Neil was a Sincere Master of his Discipline, and he Always Fed Back Into It,Never Allowing It To be "Phoned In" ! Yes,I've seen them Live, and that's where They'll Always be for me! They Definitely Were Not "Studio Refugees"!

They played until recently, Peart said he couldn't physically do it anymore to the same degree so they quit. More than 40 years on the road and ending it when you are still good. That's the way to do it, some of these bands I have seen should of quit long time ago. Thought it would of been more but google is telling approx. 1500 live shows.
Hardly a mainstream band but a dedicated fan base, everyone of those shows would of been sold out and they weren't playing real small venues either.
