As my dead MILs condo is in WPB I am very relieved that the hurricane is now turning North. Just an observation ... the Northern Bahamas will never recover from this monster that became cat 5 then just stopped over them. just devastating.

My old business partner, and his wife, both over 70 flew into Ft. Lauderdale Sat. They are on the 11th floor of a condo babysitting 2 kids while the parents flew to Greece. His wife has family in WPB also CN, pricey neighborhood.

They used to live in the harbor on St. Thomas, we both have friends and relatives there. It has not recovered fully from the last hurricane......

Bother's and his wife's two masted sail boat is stored in Jacksonville for the summer. Both retired, they spend their winters living aboard and island -hopping in the Bahamas.
The place in Jacksonville where they store it has concrete pads with special tie-down points in the concrete. Boat won't blow away, but that doesn't stop damage from flying debris.
He's waiting to see if he'll still have a boat,.... and a place to sail it to.

Relatively speaking they are fairly accurate and will continue to improve. They have massive amounts of pretty precise data on previous storms and what has changed in the last decade is the computational power to crunch those numbers. They can repeatedly test models against data from past storms with known outcomes. This storm will improve their models as will any others.coalnewbie wrote: ↑Mon. My step mother lives in New Smyrna Beach and with this thing moving so slowly and so dangerous its a real mental strain on her. It's been 5 days of do we evacuate or not and is it really just going to stay off the coast as they say. They finally ordered the evacuation of her area yesterday due to projected storm surge. Being alone thankfully she knows people who have a place inland that she can go to. Mentally it must have been like having a gun pointed to your head for 5 days. Hope any of you coal burners who have property in the area fair out well.

Glad you are impressed Richard, however, I am not. They never came close to forecasting that devastating stationary stop and that would gave been the most important item for those poor Bahamanians, They only forecast a general Northerly turn at the very last moment when it was obvious to all and still never forecast the ebbing energy of the storm. A very very poor effort continues.and clearly have learned little from previous storms. However, a lot of ad space was sold.
