First it was the sharks that made the news...
https://twitter.com/A_WhiteShark/status/1152686786608603138
Now a tornado...

The tornado skipped our neighborhood but either side got hammered...
The wife was in the middle of it but safe in a commercial building...

Be glad it wasn't one of those sharknados. Sounds like you had all of the ingredients.

That was the joke the night before when the first warnings were sounded...
And nothing but a heavy rain and strong wind happened...
The next morning the real deal came...
Some people just blew off the warnings...
Where it hit the damage was extensive...
Mostly trees and power poles...
Our house was about 3000 feet from the path of the tornado...

I like listening to WRKO in the afternoon on I heart radio (Howie Carr) and have been hearing the Boston news reports on this. Good to hear you came out ok. I used to go into a place just off route 6 on Whites Path, I am assuming the tornado was a ways south of there?

Glad you fared out well. There were several tornado touchdowns in Central PA this Summer and some produced widespread damage.

It has been an awful season for severe weather here. In May we had the worst thunderstorm I think I have ever seen come in and drop hail that was nearly as big as a 50 cent piece. I ran for cover in the Scalehouse as it hit and was really beginning to get scared. The ice was piled up around the buildings like snow drifts.

Please... no thank-you.

doubtful...
It was old...
Plus the huge wing was facing the wrong way...
That day...
Asbestos too...
All the systems terminated in that building...
Probably be torn down and built new...
If they have good insurance...
33% is the tipping point in rehab to be forced to current code...
For everything...
Building, fire, electric, ADA the list gets pricey to rehab...

How is this calculated?

% of estimated new project cost...
Or a 'code enforcement person' sees something...
while the rehab work is going on...
Customer was doing remodel...
Plumbing inspector saw some old work that was wrong , not code...
The work was buried in the past under flooring but was exposed during remodel...
Had to be brought up to code...
Scope of work then tripped the 'Bring other stuff up to code'...
In this case it was a sprinkler system that needed to be installed...
Old code did not require sprinklers in buildings of that size...
previous remodels were under threshold...
Added over a million to the work already being done...
The whole thing is a bit arbitrary...
Usually gets negotiated so there is public safety improvement...
Major reason why the Motels down here have not been improved in the last 30 years...
Some progress has been made with the town issuing permits but they have been tear downs...
The beach front motels/Hotels want to add a third floor and have greater density if they rebuild...
Long slow process that has stalled the creation of any 'new' hotel/motels...
