Dare I mention the word Maria. USVI dead in it's path ... Those poor souls. Dare I even utter the word Lee. Millions of Floridians may head for Presque Isle, Maine with a sack of black rocks and a 100 year old stove. Anything is better than this.

I have an old HS friend that has fled St. Thomas for Downeast Maine, where she came from. her son will attend the local HS while the rebuilding goes on. She did not feel safe in St. Thomas....wonder why?

After Maria gives the old 1 .. 2 punch, I predict he will be in Maine a while. In the case of St. Thomas it will take many many years to make it a place worth living in again. Have you seen the photos - WOW. He does have a good ash pan throwing arm I hope? He and his teenage children can move back and start a wood stove shop. People have no idea how long it takes to recover. With St Croix it took 10 years at least. I wish them well.her son will attend the local HS while the rebuilding goes on
Jose for the Cape? I don't think so. High society never gets hit and you are used to those 40mph blows.... surfs up. However, Maria could do a Sandy on us at the farm here or the Cape. I am still clearing the wood up from the last one. I have no idea what to do with the fallen trees. Somebody had the idea of sawing them into logs and burning it all .... silly people. That sounds like way to much work.

St Croix got smashed by Hugo in 1989. I rented a 38' sailing yacht and traveled down the Leeward Isles in 2001 (I think, the brain is foggy). Christmas winds were interesting but manageable. St Croix was not totally restored even then but very beautiful. Let's hope they kept all the plans as Maria is about to tear it apart again with a Cat 5 monster. More people for Presque Isle ... start building.

My old business partner lived in St. Thomas, his wife's family were old hands there and into Real Estate. He got out in 82 because of his growing children and crime...etc. His brother is still on the island, we think. He has not made contact since the hurricane hit. His house used to be in the promo postcard for the island, he still has some of those....not sure if it survived this one. Or will the next one.
My friends letter out to everyone was well written, but there was a subtle undertone as to what the conditions were like and what the real danger was......it was obvious that the island was devastated as she had been thru all of them since 86.....

Maria be crankin' it up...
STC about to get slammed but bad...Based on these data, the
initial wind speed was increased to 150 kt. The minimum pressure
estimated from earlier dropsonde data is 909 mb, which is the tenth
lowest minimum pressure recorded in an Atlantic basin hurricane.

PR will not have power for 6 months, no running water or phones for 3.5 million people. They are bankrupt and can't pay for anything. Even the media has all these stories but how about this one....

Maria gets some special treatment...
But Lee is back...After 70 advisories, enough is enough. The tropical-storm-force
winds from Jose have finally subsided and moved out of the
southern New England.
