I'm considering getting my parents a flight and 4 night stay in Las Vegas which is actually pretty reasonable. I'm seeing prices for around $250to $350 each with a flight from Philly.
Looking at the choices for hotels there is "The Strip" or "Downtown". My Father likes to gamble but that will occupy him for a day or two at the most. I wondering what would be the better place to send them for other attractions. I see that giant lighted ceiling over the road is right in downtown and there was mention of a few museums. I'm guessing the strip is going to be better for shows? I think they would prefer the odder things especially if they could walk to them.
Any advice?

I'm not getting them anything besides the flight and hotel, it's something they will enjoy but not something they would do themselves. I'm sure a trip to the Hoover dam and maybe even the Grand Canyon via helicopter might be something they would do but I'm going to leave that up to them, they can figure out what they are going to do when they get there but I would like to put them somewhere they can walk to a few places. I'm thinking that Downtown is my best bet from what I'm reading.

We just got back from Vegas, there are MANY choices, we got Flight and Hotel for around $350. We stayed at the Excalibur, it's walking distance from many of the other hotels on the strip, a monorail to Mandolay Bay and Luxor. MGM grand across the street. along with everything else. Not sure where you were thinking?
Almost every hotel/casino has shows, depending on what you like.
Just make sure they stay away from the FREE or DISCOUNT people offering tickets to shows, they are a pain in the butt. We just ignore them, some make you watch videos or stuff for Time Shares, and try and sign you up for something.....there is a lot to see and do without having to go very far, unless they want to drive to Red Rock Canyon, Snow MOuntain, etc...they are pretty close and nice for sightseeing. Grand Cayon is a good drive. Hoover dam is nice too.
You can get a bus pass too for like $6 or 8 for day if they want to travel around the strip or up to Freamont Street.
The Old section, Freamont Street (old Section) is nice too, has a nice Laser Light show every evening. We've stayed in both sections. Both are nice depending on what you are doing.
Here's the view from our room at the Excalibur. Just across from New York, New York.

No this is regular trip....WNY wrote: Just make sure they stay away from the FREE or DISCOUNT people offering tickets to shows, they are a pain in the butt.
There is a few options for places right near Freemont and I think that is what they would enjoy, I'm sure they would enjoy a show but I guess what I'm asking is if they want to stroll around where is the best location. There or the strip? I'm guessing Freemont street is going to have a wider variety of interesting things? The Old section, Freamont Street (old Section) is nice too, has a nice Laser Light show every evening. LOL, I'm willing to spend some money but I'm not dropping a grand on it. The other places appear to be nice enough and certainly better than what my penny pinching old man would buy. They'd be staying at the motel 6 20 miles out of town if it were up to him.

@Richard, I meant there are people in the Hotels and outside that try and get you to sign up for stuff to get FREE gifts or discount tickets, etc.....when you are there.

I thought you could by a condo in Vegas for $250. What happened to $49 a night hotels and $1 breakfasts at Circus Circus. Horse farmers don't spend much time in Vegas.

The $250 to $350 price is the hotel and the flight included for 4 nights. Circus Circus is in the $250 range...coalnewbie wrote: What happened to $49 a night hotels and $1 breakfasts at Circus Circus.....
I've actually been in LV before but drove through. We started on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon about 4AM, through Vegas, through Death Valley and then stopped the early evening somewhere above Mammoth Lakes. Longest single ride of my life and what bunch of scenery changes.

Actually now that I'm looking there isn't a huge difference between 4 nights and 7 nights... Most of that cost must be the flight and the casino is trying to get you in the door.

The closer you get to "downtown", the more the cost per night jumps.
At the turn of the Millennium, a buddy & I got a room right near the ... Skylon (is that Niagra Falls???) ... or Stratosphere .... can't remember the damn name ... whatever that Seattle-needle-looking building with the crazy free-fall ride on the top is at one end of the strip. It was really cheap, and wasn't in the middle of the ghetto either. Probably not a place where you want to put your parents, but it really wasn't that bad. It's no Five-Star palace, for sure.
There's a constant stream of buses running through, so getting downtown is never an issue.
We had a BLAST down there! I spend the most money in one night that I EVER have in my entire life there .... The ride back to Phoenix was sooo depressing ....

I was considering Niagara but it's too cold, me and the old GF went around February and I enjoyed myself a lot but I'm not sure Mom and Dad are up for the cold. Skylon is in Niagara, I like to call it the place I left $300.
View from the room, that's the sunrise in the first one. I would be snoring at this point.
