Jersey sucks! It is so glamorized now because of Jersey Shore. Boring as can be, nothing to do, cops are nazis, and it's way overpriced. I lived in Jersey for 22 years. I'd never go back!

I still live in Jersey, I spent 4 years in Colorado and loved it.

I left this state because I hated it. I moved back and nothing has changed. It still sucks. I may consider leaving again if I can convince the family to leave with me.

Hey Heya doon? Hey doon. I'll tell ya what. Imma give youse guys dat bashed Jersey a break heah. Seeins hows youse lived here an all.

Lots of scenes in that vid that brought back memories. Decades ago when we were kids, somebody in our group went in an open office window at High Point State Park and stole a trooper's nightstick!
I went to Boonton High School. The year before I started in '71, they took the doors off the boy's room stalls to keep people from booting heroin! In '71 the school was flooded with orange sunshine. That was four-way. My buddies gave me a tiny piece off a pill and an hour later I was watching the clocks melt off the walls in study hall. Then I took more the next day, had a psychotic break, they had to take me to the emergency room and dose me with iv thorazine. A million other Boonton stories. Boonton was mentioned and shown many times on the hit series The Sopranos.

First concert I ever saw, The Allman Bros. at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. Blasted out of my mind  '71

I had so many jobs in Jersey. One of the first was working in a steel yard in Jersey City. I was getting ripped doing that work. The "locals" used to throw rocks at us off the industrial building rooftops!

I worked at Aircraft Radio Corp. Boonton Twp. One day they re-enacted the first blind instrument flight in history. ARC had an airstrip on site. They came in with a trainer biplane, the front cockpit had a canvas cover over it! The guy landed the plane on instruments only, with a safety pilot in the back cockpit. Then the whole factory got together and heard Jimmy Doolitle speak! He was a frail old man by then, great American hero!

I caught a glimpse of the Harding Township Cops in the vid. That is one of the most exclusive zip codes in the country. I worked for a family of mortgage bankers there for 7 years. I set off their house alarms more than once and had to apologize to the cops. The same people had a waterfront trophy house on Barnegat Bay in Mantoloking. What a great place to work that was.

So I guess I'm proud of New Jersey in a twisted kind of way. New Jersey, your favorite foreign country.......

Only the strong survive.....I'd put it more like only the stubborn saps who don't know any better stay and make due :funny: No, I don't really have any fabulous memories in NJ. High Point was nice, but the parks in PA are way better. More activities, better maintained and much cleaner. And there is more of them. So far I haven't found any carvings in the benches about who's been there before, or who loves who.
I remember going to Seaside when I was a kid. You'd rent a motel, drink yourself silly in it and then go cause a ruckus on the boardwalk without getting yourself arrested for public drunkenness. And then having to drive all the way home at the end of the night without getting pulled over by a Nazi, er, sorry, I meant trooper. That's the highlight of every 17 year old in NJ. And the beach always had crushed beer cans and dirty tampons readily available for you in the sand. That was always a nice touch.

And the traffic was terrible during rush hour. Unavoidable no matter which road you took to try and avoid the highways. My dad worked in Roseland, and he had a looong drive to work everyday and back. I remember when I worked in Boonton, I think I was on 46, and just sitting there, bumper to bumper in the middle of July, feeling like a trapped egg in a frying pan. Knowing that your commute time would be so much shorter if not for this traffic, and there is nothing you can do about it. And speaking of cars, I literally cut my insurance costs almost in half the day I moved across the river. I was paying around $2100 a year for minimum coverage in NJ, down to $1200 in PA for the same coverage. I was ecstatic to be paying so little, I kept it like that for eight years. Then, come to find out I was still paying too much because I had insurance thru an agent. So about two years ago, I shopped again. Now I'm paying $60 a month with Allstate for comp & collision on my car and liability on my truck. I don't know anybody in Jersey paying that little on car insurance, even my mother who has like 30 years more experience driving than I do! Like I said, overpriced. No thanks boys, you can have it.

Atlantic City is a joke, too.
http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2011/05/after_de ... ty_at.html

They showed on my local news that Atlantic City is being blown away by neighboring casinos, including the ones in PA like Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs that they have resorted to riske drink servers to try and attract more customers. Sex sells. That's pretty desperate!

Well, as the song says - only the strong survive, adjust or otherwise :out:
There's many who have and many who will.
Many of them are and remain my friends.
  • I was hoping this thread wouldn't turn into a crying match about how tough someone has had it when they tried to make it here and couldn't. I just take notice every day on my way to and from work that the majority of the vehicles I see are bearing Pensy plates. My guess is because NJ's median household income was $69,687 (US Census Bureau) 2'nd highest for the nation behind MD. No traffic here. You'll never find me living in the part of the state y'all discribed. It's just not for me either. If you look and choose wisely ... that's all I'll say because I don't want nor do I see it happening here. People I know around here will help you out when you need it, even when you don't.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to give you the wrong impression. I wasn't crying at all. I just feel sorry for the people who still have to live there. The day I made the decision to leave NJ was the day I made the best decision in my life, next to marrying my wife.
The reason why you see so many Penna plates is because you live in the far western part of NJ. I used to live not too far from you in Mt. Bethel and Portland, right across from Columbia. So I know that area well. It's normal to see a lot of plates from an adjacent state when you are near it's border. It's like that in every state. Take it from a truck driver that has been across quite a few state lines. Trust me, it's not because NJ is so great that everyone just want's to be there. :funny: Plus, it's been a known fact for many years that there has been a major influx of NJ and NY residents moving to PA. A lot of those Penna plates are your former neighbors. NJ's median household income is higher than PA's and that's because it has to be. You pay through the teeth for everything there. If the median household income was any lower, it would be fiscally impossible. And what a lot of people have come to realize is that it's best to live in PA and work in NJ. I did that for a while, but the only bad thing was that you had to pay state taxes twice. You'd get all your NJ taxes back in April since you are a non-resident, but you'd be paying it all the rest of the year.
Also, you said you don't see your area building up? You may be right.
http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article ... 1/NEWS0908

There has been plans in place to put rail service to NYC from NEPA. When that happens, and more people come to realize what all those other Penna plates have come to realize, western NJ may very well end up a ghost town!

The only reason I stay in NJ is the wages here are predominantly way more than neighboring states. My trade is specific, home maintenance and repair. It is true though, especially now, prices of merchandise and food are going through the roof. I looked at a 4" pvc fitting yesterday at HD, WTF it was around $3 a short while ago, now around $7. I stay out of the local A&P- total ripoff lately. I stock up at Costco when I can, 1/2 the cost on some items.
There's a small deli nearby that makes a good 1/2 sub. They have good fresh sub rolls that counts for a lot. With a soda it's $10. I treat myself once in a while. On the other hand, way "down the shore" there's a big awesome Shoprite in Wall Twp. that has a sub kiosk. I used to get a sub there that was so big it was good for 2 meals. $3.89.

The population density in NJ is actually greater than India.

One plus is, there is everything here; if you need a wheel bearing for a 1932 Packard Sport Phaeton, somebody's got it on a shelf within driving distance.

I studied for the NJ State Real Estate Salesperson's license a few years ago. 75 hr. class run by a pompous, arrogant old Basking Ridge Realtor. I never took the test. Point is, there's a section in the official book that deals with "White Flight." White people move away when minorities move in. I see it all the time.

I remember coming back from binghamton to live here back around '79, because of a crazy broad. It almost killed me, housing was so expensive, still is.
Then I came back from Florida a few years later after splitting with my neaxt crazy girlfriend. Everything I owned was in my '76 4 door 6cyl Nova. I'm coming up the Parkway and getting into the industrial areas-- thinking I made a huge mistake,,,

However, there is a pulse and an energy here like nowhere else. I've heard it described as a "sense of urgency."

I have a deal here so I pay no rent. I exchange services for that. And believe me it's been exhausting after Irene.

I'm laying low until the big O gets voted out. Then maybe somebody will take charge of this country and get the economy going.

Glad to hear about the benefits of PA. I know a lot of PA and NYS people HATE people from NJ. Because the one's they've encountered have been typically arrogant. Some of them come out with money, buy hunting land etc., and proceed to offend the locals. I try not to be that way when I go upstate.

Benefits to any area I guess. I'll tell ya what, I live under the approach paths to 3 major international airports, Newark, JFK, LaGuardia. There is never more than 30 seconds 24/7 when there isn't an aircraft overhead! Except 9/11/01- the skies turned eerily silent, I saw the destruction just after the WTC was gone, at the overlook at Washington Rock State Park in my town. Saw an F-16 fly over my place too.
My buddy moved to Denver years ago, he said people in NJ think it's the only place you can survive. ;)
Hope I get driven out before it kills me :D

Wow - lots of hotties in NJ there!

I met this chick from NJ while camping in DE with my parents when I was 15 or so. Hottest one in the campground ... and she ends up in the site right next to us. My ol' man was drooling! Then he about died when he saw I hooked up with her. Had my hair permed at the time & it was 20 shades lighter than normal, plus I was tanned from being on the beach all day. If any woman ever tells you looks don't matter ... BULLSHIT!! I had the best summer of my life that year, all because I got my hair permed. After she left I found another hot one about 15 minutes later. :D

Anyone else get sick to their stomachs after seeing the shots of 95 & the Jersey Pike? God I HATE that strip of asphalt ....

Many many similarities to MA. They're nearly twins.

[quote="Dann757"]The only reason I stay in NJ is the wages here are predominantly way more than neighboring states.

Seems to me that this is the common mistake every person in NJ makes. They focus on what is coming in, and forget about what is going out. Once you pay a certain amount for so long, you become acustomed to it, and think it's "normal". Let's use the car insurance example. Paying 1300 a year for minimum state coverage in NJ seems pretty accurate, according to my mother. And they do not drive new cars. That is "normal" for them, and I think they are getting ripped off. I called Allstate and got a theoretical quote on them, with their cars, as if they lived in my house, and they gave us a quote over the phone (3 way call) of less than half. My mom was floored.

If you can make $75K a year in NJ doing a specific job, but have to shell out $30K a year just to live there, (Im just using arbitrary numbers for example) then you really only have $45K of spendable $. The same job in PA you might make $60K a year, but only have to spend $10 grand to live there, then you have $50 left over, and the guy in PA actually has more $ than the guy in NJ! The people in NJ focus on the BIG number, and that's it. It's all a show. It's just so they can be haughty, puff out their chest and say "I live in Jersey. I make more than you, and I can proove it". Listen, this is coming from a former Jersey boy of 22 years. I've lived in and seen both sides. But this is why people from PA hate people from NJ. They have this crazy idea that they are somehow better than us. And IMO, a lot of this stems from that BIG number that they all have backwards in the first place. I can show you mansions in Clarks Summit, Dunmore and the Abingtons that would put Jersey to shame. Matter of fact, my neighbor has a nice mansion that has a killer view of Scranton and the valley cities.

One plus is, there is everything here; if you need a wheel bearing for a 1932 Packard Sport Phaeton, somebody's got it on a shelf within driving distance.

We actually have more places to shop than Jersey does in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area. And there is just more coming because of the natural gas drilling. We just got two new hotels put up in Dickson City within the last year or two. They say there is something like 750 billion cubic feet of natural gas benieth our feet here, and they want to pipe it to all the eastern cities. That is bringing a lot of $ to the area and businesses are poping up everywhere around here. We also got a 14 screen IMAX theatre put up not too long ago.

However, there is a pulse and an energy here like nowhere else. I've heard it described as a "sense of urgency."

IMO, that sense of "urgency" is due to the traffic and trying to pay your bills. It's not because there was ever anything special going on.

I know I can't be ALL negative, though. One thing I will admit is the girls in NJ know how to take care of themselves. Lots of eye candy to look at. That's why I married one. There are hot girls in PA, but not as numerous as what's in NJ. Most of the women in NJ doll themselves up and they make my peni$ tingle. LMAO!

Why do you still bash NJ in the NJ section if you moved out and it's so great where you are?
stokersmoker wrote:It's just so they can be haughty, puff out their chest and say "I live in Jersey. I make more than you, and I can proove it". Listen, this is coming from a former Jersey boy of 22 years.
You're the only one being haughty.
stokersmoker wrote:I can show you mansions in Clarks Summit, Dunmore and the Abingtons that would put Jersey to shame. Matter of fact, my neighbor has a nice mansion that has a killer view of Scranton and the valley cities.
Yeah right. What do you think a mansion is? It is a pretty area though :D You started it. Statistics do not bear out your arguement by any stretch of the imagination.
stokersmoker wrote:We actually have more places to shop than Jersey does in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area.
Yeah? A quaint small Pa town has more shopping than NJ? You're dreaming. You're the one that started this, I was trying to be polite.
stokersmoker wrote:that sense of "urgency" is due to the traffic and trying to pay your bills.
Maybe that's what it was for you. I was just trying to have a pleasant conversation. I didn't want to work for half-price, but I took an accountant to a warehouse, for a business meeting in Carteret, a few weeks ago. Just drove him there. There is more industry and commerce in that one industrial town than you ever saw I guess. The guy bought me lunch and tossed me a c-note. We drove past refineries, warehouses as big as 2 football fields, big bucks, massive industry.
So once again, dream on.

I don't go to the Pa. section and bash Pa. I have too much class for that. So go ahead and keep nursing your grudge.

Not quite sure what you mean about "the NJ section". I live up in the Scranton area, not many Jersey people here, far as I can tell. You have all the Jersey people and New Yorkers coming to the Poconos. That's south of where I am. I live too far away to work in Jersey or NYC.

I wasn't being haughty. These are facts that people like you wouldn't know because you don't go out of your little circle much. Clearly you haven't been up here too much, so you wouldn't know where the nice houses are, shopping or anything. Do yourself a favor and at least do a google search and see what stores pop up before you act like you know what your talking about. Hate when people make themselves look like a fool. Tell ya what though, I'd be glad to give ya a tour so you can see what you don't know.

Massive industry in NJ? Buddy, there is no massive industry anywhere in this country right now, and I CAN show you statistics on that. We don't make anything anymore, remember? The buildings might be there, but they are empty. The only industry in this country that still exist are the ones in the service industry, that's it. If it wasn't for that, we'd have zero economy. So I don't know what your idea of "massive industry" is. But I can tell you that they are expecting this newfound natural gas industry to be even bigger than the coal boom was for us in the early 1900's. Coal and steel is what put Scranton on the map to begin with, and with all these greenies complaining about global warming and pollution, I really think natural gas is going to be a major part in the answer to that, along with wind and solar. And things are already changing a lot up here, and the gas was only found in '05, and really started to be taken seriously in the last couple years. We are only on the beginning up-slope of this. Nobody could convince me to live anywhere else right now. So if you really want to have the "industry" debate, we can have that. NJ's claim to fame is NYC, and we all have seen the numbers on Wall St.

Sorry your angry man, but you can't sway my opinion. I run into a lot of people like you. PA people are just as naive about NJ as NJ is about PA, so don't feel bad. People in PA think that all of NJ looks like Newark. I tell them that at one time, there were more cows than people in Sussex county, and they look at me like I just grew a third eye.

I didn't start anything, I expressed my humble opinion. If anybody started anything it was peaburner for posting a video about NJ on a site called NEPA crossroads which is a site about coal.

... In the Board index ‹ Your Community ‹ New Jersey SECTION.
stokersmoker wrote:Clearly you haven't been up here too much,
I've been through Scranton dozens of times over more than 3 decades. Lately the traffic you complain about seems to be really bad due to endless Pa. roadwork that never gets done.
stokersmoker wrote:Sorry your angry man, but you can't sway my opinion.
As long as you realize it's your opinion and not based on fact.
stokersmoker wrote:So if you really want to have the "industry" debate, we can have that.
Not all manufacturing has left the country yet. I'll get some info. http://www.census.gov/mcd/

Go to craigslist R&R and you'll see a lot of Jersey bashing too, I guess there's not much to do up by you.

In the meantime, I understand how stressful it must be to be a truck driver. I can send you a map of NJ to throw darts at in your spare time if you have any. :)

I see you haven't lost that old New Jersey know it all arrogance! so we have more in common than we think 8-)
