My family and I recently got home from a camping trip in Massena, NY and I thought I would share some pictures and information about the area. We stayed at Robert Moses Campground, which is actually on an island that was created when the Seaway was created. You have to drive under one of the locks just to get out to the campsite. They have cabins available for rent, and tent & RV sites. We rented a 2 bedroom cabin that had a full kitchen and private bathroom, and a huge yard that gave the kids plenty of space. We made a few trips to the beach at the campsite, and got to watch plenty of ships going by. We also went to the observatory at the Eisenhower lock, and got to see a few different ships go through.

I have lived my entire life less than two hours from Massena, and never knew much about the Seaway, the locks, etc. I went to the visitor center a the Moses-Saunders power dam and was amazed at the scale of the project. 22,000 people worked around the clock for ~4 years on the Seaway project. The scale of what had to be done is tough to comprehend.

I found two videos which cover it well. The first film is Canadian, the second is American. Enjoy.

Oh yeah, they were in all their glory. They did not catch any fish, but they reeled in the biggest fish skull I have ever seen. Must have been a Musky or something like that.

I am headed back to Massena this summer for another camping trip. While doing some research for activities I came across a few more videos. First video is about the rise and fall of manufacturing in that area. Second video is about a Bitcoin mining company that has moved in.

We’ve flown drones over it and it’s crazy cuz you can see the roads and everything under the river. Quite a project, I’m gonna look into those cabins, have you ever made your way out to bolt castle?

I am back from another camping trip in Massena. We got to see some nice boats go through, including one that was loaded with iron ore pellets - they got loaded on Lake Superior and were headed to Quebec City. The boys had a great time swimming and fishing (they caught some nice bass this time). On the last day of our stay I brought the boys to the power dam visitor center and had them generate their own power to see what it takes to light a bulb, run a toaster, etc. We also got to talk to a local contractor that was working on a project to upgrade the turbines. Overall it was a great trip.

Thanks, Rob. Been up to the seaway area a few times around Clayton and Alex Bay. Having grown up on the waterfront, I find the hydro plants and locks fascinating. And NYS has plenty of both.

For anyone interested in the best "renewable power", NYS is the number one in producing hydropower east of the Rockys.

I am headed back in August.

I recently found a website with a great collection of photographs for the Seaway construction:

That was back when America could build things. Now we can't get past the studies. Sounds like a nice trip. NYS is beautiful.
