If I recall, on your switch to the heat pump HWH, you swapped it out for an all electric and this is your sole source of HW.

And since you heat your basement you get it running 100% of time on heat pump mode, so it was a no-brainer to switch. Your ROI based on my #s would be 1.65 yrs.

What was your total out of pocket cost for you? I think you mentioned it before but I forgot.
IDK around $500

I have run mine all winter on heat pump mode. Always ample hot water. It is at one end of my basement in the only tiny unfinished utility room I have. I leave the door open from the living space. Going in the other direction is a door that goes up 6 steps into the cold attached garage. There is an option to vent the water heater out of the house/room.

Yes, that guy in video did note this ... I think he had an all electric 40 gal HWH also and switches to that in the winter. I dunno why he doesn't just go to "all electric" with his hybrid one..he gave a reason but I don't recall in one of his vids.

I would switch to my on-demand HWH inside my boiler. Uses 1 gal a day for HW.

All electric estimated at 3500 kwh .. about $1250/yr ~ $3.50/day (* 35c/kwh pricing)

Or $1,743 a year if you live in MA. :o

The HPWH save a ton of watts but im not sure how much cash it saves vs a Gas fired water heater. Since Gas is cheap and Kws are not.

Even Eversource is screwing people. I've got National Grid. You can't win in MA! If it ain't the government screwing you, it's other companies, BECAUSE of government policies. :x

A lot depends on how much your gas utility is charging you. Last yr when gas was $9 for 1 million Btus my utility was charging me $9.This yr the daily price is hovering around $2 and they are still charging me $7. Could be due to too long of contract i suppose. Still electric resistance WH would cost roughly $60 for 1MBTUs. at .20c a KWH.
With a HPWH at a factor of 3.5 that would be about $17 for 1 MBTUs . According to my energy calculator. So still quite a bit more. And NY is Banning Nat gas.

I just looked at the tag on my water heater and it states Estimated Yearly use: 928 kwh. My guess is I was using over a gallon of oil per day just for DHW. I am coming out way ahead regardless of the cost for electricity.

Let's not forget that the boiler also requires electricity to run.

Let's not forget if you have gas in your home, you have to pay all summer for the service even though you are barely using any gas. Having that account open costs money.

Definitely with oil its a no brainer, At $3.75 a gallon it cost $35 for MBTUs. But my coal now cost at least twice as much as gas per BTU and my stoker is about 70% efficient and gas boiler is 95%. Of course that could change in the future. Im hedging my bets and using both. I can always use my HPWH elsewhere. Its getting close to 10yrs old now.

Another way the gas companies get you. I remember I had a rental that I was not in a hurry to fix so I let the utilities get turned off rather than pay the monthly fee. It was a hassle to get gas turned back on. Had to hire a legitimate company to pressure test then have it inspected to get service turned back on.

Yes thats a safety issue .The gas company doesnt make any money from making you inspect your gas line for leaks.I do my own pressure testing and the gas company sends out a guy to witness it and then turn on the gas if it passes the test at no charge. I want to set up the gas mainly in the event i can no longer service a coal boiler or i sell this house. Until that time ill use whichever one makes the most sense. Plus the Gas company is paying for 85% of the new gas combination boiler.

The gas company indirectly benefits by requiring pressure testing because if a person knows they will need to spend $500 to pressure test they probably won't turn off service between tenants. If I remember correctly that service costs like over $30 per month with zero gas usage.
