Is the US Dollar to Canadian Dollar exchange rate improving?

It looks to me like the US Dollar has very good purchasing power in Canada right now and has been on the rise since January 2014.

For someone from the States looking to buy direct from Canada, the rate is 1 US Dollar to 1.14 Canadian dollars.

Can anyone here verify this?

That exchange rate sounds about right. The dollar has been strengthening across the board against pretty much every currency over the past 6 months...mainly due to weakening economies internationally while our own economy has continued to chug along with positive growth. And our domestic energy production has helped as well.

Holy crapper .... last time I vacationed in Niagra, I got $1.56 Canadian for every dollar. We had a BLAST - livin' large for a change. Went on a helicopter ride, jet boat ride up the Niagra River into the Whirlpool Basin, and a bunch of other attractions I could never afford to go to prior.

Looks like those days are long gone. That was in '01 or '02.

The Canadian Dollar averaged 1.22 from 1972 until 2014, reaching an all time high of 1.61 in January of 2002 and a record low of 0.92 in November of 2007.

This explains why Smitty lived like a Rockefeller on his vacation.

Exchange rates are subject to change daily.

I vacation there every summer and lived through the highs and lows. Canadians that come to the states regularly get a US dollar account and a Canadian dollar account and try to play the rate game trying to buy low sell high. I don’t know how successful most are with that.

We stopped in Halifax one underway. Had to learn how to tip the "local native dancers" with coins vice bills.... Lucky for us they just laid out a sheet and we flicked loons at her.

:funny:

I had a ball up there - you get way more for your money than you do back home. In Worcester a lappie was $20. Up there, $5! :dancing:

This was before I was married. My girlfriend at the time happened to like lappies as well, so we got a twofer ...

With the current exchange rate, many places across the border will happily accept US cash at par...they may or may not offer you an exchange rate, and your mileage may vary when you ask about it. If you are just going North for an afternoon or whatever and need some pocket cash, stop at a bank/ATM and get cash there. You will get the exchange rate of the day, and have Canadian currency to buy poutine and beer. :)
