Hi,

Any asphalt driveway contractors on the board?

I just bought a house which has a driveway that is in good condition overall- but needs large cracks filled and the whole surface top-coated to slow down the oxidation process.

Is the Home Depot grade of asphalt coating good enough - or is the stuff available to the pro's so much better? I know that the hot tar crack repair is a thousand times better than what a homeowner can do himself, I'm just not convinced that the asphalt coating they apply is worth the added expense.

Thanks for any feedback!

I wouldn't coat it. It WILL spider crack if coated. Hot tar for the cracks.

I was just quoted 5k for my small 4 car driveway. Crazy what they get.

I left a voicemail for a local company yesterday. I want them to hot-tar the cracks which should help extend the life of the driveway. I don't want to have to replace the drive way until I retire in twenty years.

They chip seal the roads here as a maintenance policy...
Hot asphalt over the existing pavement then small gravel that is rubber rolled to adhere...
Hot asphalt for crack repair first...

Make sure the crack is cleaned out, down deep as you can. You want to get down in between the sections, not just cap off a lot of dirt.

Earth everyone’s comments are true but I must say even professional grade black top and crack sealers are not by any means what they once were. The oils and additives for the emulsification process simply are poor. I’m sure someone with a degree blew B.S. up someone’s you know what to make things more eco friendly. As far as crack sealing on your driveway go for it but I’ve seen first hand cracks will appear again and cause more cracks because the black top is weak and you have sealed it back together then it breaks beside the crack you filled. Oil for tar and chip is awful tree sap is being mixed in now so I’ve been told, Penn dot did our road in the fall and the chips are mostly plowed off. Bottom line nothing seems to last today. I’m a twp road worker and see this daily.
