Suddenly the thought of Aquaponics is beginning to catch my interest. Have any of you tried this yet? Would a 275 gallon IBC container (or two) work well as the fish tank(s)? I've heard that Yellow Lake Perch work well for this.

Tilapia is supposed to be good to raise. Tasty too. One of my favorite fish.

Yes, they are the best choice, but they are often considered a nuisance or invasive species, and it isn't legal to raise them in many places. Bluegills are supposed to work well also.

Larry,

What is your primary reason for an aquaponics project? Is it to raise fish, plants and vegetables, or both?

If you have the room IBC tanks are perfect if your plan is to raise fish.

I setup my aquaponics greenhouse as an indoor year-round garden using goldfish and koi waste to feed the plants.

Mainly vegetables, but occasional fish. Thinking basement. Only need to feed my wife and I.

Your basement temperature is something to consider when choosing the type of fish.

My goldfish and koi are not very active in the winter and eat less, which means less waste (fertilizer) to feed my plants.

That combined with shorter days and less sunlight, reduces the vegetable yield this time of year.

I'm sure if I kick up the heat from 60* to 80* and install some grow lights, things would get back to normal.

Good point. It has the advantage of being a walk out basement, but the doors are a limiting hindrance. Do they make collapsible totes with waterproof bag liners? If not, Then plastic 55 gallon barrels would have to do.

Edit, they do exist: https://liquid-ibc.com/containers/bag-in-box/easifold-1000

How much does this provide to you Paulie, in terms of fish and edible plants? And at what cost? Inquiring minds want to know......

Indeed! Paulie's aquaponics set-up is impressive, and I'd like to know more also.

A few years ago I restored a Monarch fireplace insert with the intentions of installing it in the basement. 1892 Monarch Fireplace Insert

That turned into a project to turn the basement into a man cave. When I decided to dig out and install a walk out basement door, it was either cover it with a bilco type door or a glass enclosure.

The post above includes building the glass enclosure.

Once the enclosure was up, it was a toss up between a hot tub or greenhouse. I needed a shed and the best spot to put it is where I had my garden. I also have a small garden pond that I wanted to relocate, and needed a place in the meantime to keep the fish.

That's when I decided to research Aquaponics.

Stay tuned :D

I collected a vast amount of information on Pinterest when setting up my greenhouse.

If you go to Pinterest search my name
Paul Kendzor
Somehow I ended up with two sites, on one I have 4 followers on the other I have over 2,000.
Click on the one that has my name and under it is @KendzorMachinery
That's the larger one.

Scroll down until you find these two folders:

The folder Greenhouse has a lot of information on aquaponics.

The other folder is titled My Aquaponics Greenhouse

Wow nice. I’m surprised you only need that small amount of fish. How do they fertilize?
