Exploding Heating Element

Had some excitement with breakfast this morning.

This is from cooktop stove and I was looking at it upside down, turned wrong burner on so there was no pot on it but I'd imagine if there was it would of put a hole in it. A few minutes later I saw something out of the corner of my eye and as soon as I looked it arced like you would not believe. It almost hit the ceiling and I'm pretty sure a spark or two made it.

Went online and it appears this happens, not sure why but I need some new underwear.

I have had that happen to me before. It is pretty scary. Glad you were okay.

I saw on TV that some stove maker now has it so a person can turn on their oven via Siri or Alexa, and I was thinking, "now that will start a lot of fires!"

I can see where a soccer mom, on her way home from work might want to set the stove to a given temp so she can toss in the casserole as soon as she walks through the door. I get that, but is the risk worth it? Why not just wait 15 minutes and be home when the oven is on.

about 20 yrs ago the element in the oven at my parents house caught fire. it went up like a sparkler.

Difficult to tell if any debris got into the sausages but if it did I'm now digesting it.

My kitchen stove will never have that happen again. (LOL)

For the record it is a 1917 Crawford Gas Range. This is our everyday stove, although we do have an electric wall oven for that kind of cooking. It just has better temperature settings and such.

Here Katie is, dressed in her 1930 attire in front of the kitchen range. Our home is set up like the 1930's....

I have a new gas stove but it won't be hooked up for while, this one needs to either get fixed or replaced.

Facebook marketplace or craigslist often have stove tops, stoves, and ovens for very reasonable. $250 would buy a very, very nice one in many cases.

Agreed. Many times when a home changes hands the appliances get upgraded for aesthetics.

I like electric ovens, but when it comes to cooktops...gas all the way.

Absolutely true on the appliance upgrade due to color syndrome. When our 30yo basement fridge was dying, I picked up a 2 yo samsung via CL for real cheap. A french door fridge, bottom freezer for $300, new would have been about $1200+. It is black & the couple went with new SS for their kitchen upgrade in their recently bought house. The black matches the coal stoker so it is a perfect fit in our basement!

And +1 on the electric oven / gas cooktop. That was a spousal requirement when we did the kitchen remodel a few years back. Apparently when baking the electric does not add moisture to the baked goods like propane so recipes don't need to be adjusted....who knew??!! The most nervous I have ever been on a project was trimming the opening in the special order wall oven cabinet to fit the double oven unit and the counter top opening for the cooktop. I measured about 15 times over at least two days, set up & secured the jigs at least 4 times before having the cajones to make the cuts.
