- Hand Fed Coal Furnace: Harman SF3500 reduced down to 3 grates connected to its own plenum

- Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood
Over the past few years I have managed to collect a few too many coal stoker boilers. This has created a bit of a space problem in my garage. One of our fellow members contacted me about a Van Wert VA-600. After talking about the Van Wert and our similar interests we ended up making a deal with the Van Wert and the Onan.
This is a real nice generator and I am glad I got it. I'm not sure if I can do this or not but I would like to install it in my garage and run the exhaust through sealed piping to the outside world.

The Onan is a 1989, new, never used, still mounted on it's original shipping skid, DJB 6.0, 2 cylinder diesel generator. The panel is still strapped down and has never been removed. I don't think the engine was ever fired.
As it turned out, this deal didn't really do anything to help clear out the garage. I still have to sell 2 or 3 boilers but I can now sell my MEP-016 3.5KW diesel and my little 5KW Coleman. That should clear things out good enough. This is a real nice generator and I am glad I got it. I'm not sure if I can do this or not but I would like to install it in my garage and run the exhaust through sealed piping to the outside world.

Couple questions...
Air or liquid cooled?
Is the steel skid base the fuel storage tank?
Is the strapped panel a transfer switch?
You will love that this runs @1800 RPM rather than the blaring @3600 RPM types.
I have here 2 Kohler 4 cylinder Waukesha, 10KW's from the early 1950's, tri-fuel w/ carb, I chose propane for long term fuel storage and clean burning in engine benefits.
Should be a good educational thread.

It's a DJB, so diesel, air cooled, 2 cylinder. Inside the box bolted to the back of the skid is a 5 gallon fuel tank, I haven't unstrapped the panel from the box yet but it looks like the panel has a transfer switch. All the fuel line and cables are already attached including a twist-lock connected cable to run to the house.
Yes, I am looking forward to the lower RPM motor and a little less noise. Last year I bought an old Lister diesel, air cooled, 2 cylinder but the generator head is only 120 volt. I was in the process of trying to find a 240 volt head when this deal came along.
Although the Lister is really neat, the Onan is a more complete, ready to go package that should be very easy to connect to my house.

Thank's S!
Sure thing Grump! I'll probably be doing some garage re-arranging tomorrow. Maybe I will even fire it up. Maybe I will do a video of it? The MEP did manage to get into one of my Gentleman Janitor videos.
Hummm,,, I might need to get a couple more dollars for it.wilder11354 wrote: ↑Sat. Feb. 16, 2019 4:20 pmI'll take off your hands... know you need more room. Buck two fifty be enough?

Here ya go!
MEP-016D converted to diesel power in 2006. Converting the 016's to Yanmar diesel was a common thing in the mid 2000's. This one only has 2 hours of run time with it's new engine. A few more shots of the Onan. The air outlet got banged at some point in it's life. I removed the screen and will bend it back into reasonable shape. The starter. Fuel tank and two 6 volt batteries. Here are some shots of the Lister. 12 HP, 2 cyl, 7.5KW, 120 volt. I'm very temped to put the old Lister in the old Cub Cadette. That would make an interesting little tractor!
And a shot of the 5KW Coleman. I did shoot video of the "Diesel Day" festivities. In the video we fired up the MEP and then the Lister. I will try to get that uploaded overnight.

Two Listers CS/6s stand at the ready. Run on anything with a BTU. Soy oil is my favorite from the local Jap restaurant. Lousy food but good oil.

Neat! What RPM do they run at, 900?coalnewbie wrote: ↑Sun. Feb. 17, 2019 9:19 pmTwo Listers CS/6s stand at the ready. Run on anything with a BTU. Soy oil is my favorite from the local Jap restaurant. Lousy food but good oil.
I got the video uploaded. We got some diesel smoke out of the MEP 016D and the Lister. It's been almost 2 years since I started the MEP, it fired up on the first pull, pretty amazing.

Supposed to be 600rpm, yep they are superslows. I changed the pulley and put on a 5kw alternator and run them at 800rpm. All is not well though as I struggle with frequency and voltage regulation. So it is really an ongoing project but I will pretend all is well. They do last forever if serviced correctly. Good toys though and I am having fun playing. If only I had more time and more knowledge. Should have left them as 600rpms with 3kw alts. Large flywheels give good ability to move reactive loads.

Put on a D.C. generator head on to feed Tesla Battery and then let a good inverter/charger do the regulation and AC output.coalnewbie wrote: ↑Tue.
