5 ton unit that we had installed in the summer of 95. Never cleaned it or had it serviced or even looked at it and now it stops spinning this morning. I am disgusted. I do keep power on 12 months a year, I tip is was given. So I remember back in my youth I was given a bag with manuals and a can capacitor and a motor start capacitor by the installer. 4x 5/16" screws out and a look inside. Hmm, that canny thing was really swollen and sick looking. So power off, grounded it out and removed it. Ground, herm, fan I think it says. So I replaced it. The other capacitor is soldered and it is hot and I am fed up already with this game so enough. Turned on the power with fingers in my ears ... no bang and the fan started spinning again. Bingo, I think it is working .....

Of course, now I am dialed into the many youtube videos. Now have got to get the spare part from Amazon ($58).

Run and start caps? That sounds pretty pricey to me. Try your local HVAC jobber.

The first requirement is for me to know what an HVAC jobber actually is. Horse farmers do not move in those circles. The cap is 50+12.5uF and those are not $11 a pop.
Plan B would have been in the Hudson Valley is call an HVAC guy and talk to the answering machine. He might come in August long after I died from the heat. He will tell me the compressor is about to explode and there are no parts in N America. He will then tell me it's 22 and he can't get that anymore but for $10,000 he can fix my problem with a new unit. The new unit will talk to Alexa and remind me of my annual tune ups for only $500. You obviously do not live in the Hudson Valley.

- Other Heating: Wishing it was cold enough for coal here....not really
Unfortunately this is the most likely scenario in most locals. I have an HVAC friend here that learned that selling new is the goal. Some of the techs even poked holes in the coils.....The first requirement is for me to know what an HVAC jobber actually is. Horse farmers do not move in those circles. That is why mrcool DIY is for me plan B. You don't need an HVAC thug. They must be VERY upset by that invention.I have an HVAC friend here that learned that selling new is the goal. Some of the techs even poked holes in the coils.....

Sorry, up here it's a business like F.W. Webb. They supply heating/air businesses. I just thought your $58 guess sounded high but I haven't bought one for my AC unit in 5 years or so.
Got a pic of the one you need?

Check out repairclinic.com you can get parts for Appliances, A/C and Furnaces etc etc. They ship the same day. Pretty reasonable on prices.

OK, I give....that price isn't out of the realm. It looks like a 2 part capacitor. You may be able to sub 2 different caps and tie the commons together to make it work but then again, $58 isn't that bad a run for the years you've enjoyed it's service right?
I know when we had to replace ours I was pretty happy it wasn't more than $100.00 to have a cool house again. I would have paid another grand to make it so. Heat is easy to come by...cool...not so much. You can only take off so many clothes before you get arrested.

Two schools of thought here //
If it aint broke don't fix it ... my favorite.
Technology moves on and Rob has me looking seriously at heat pumps. I am afraid he has me convinced and there goes another few thousand that I had reserved for a new EV down payment ...... hahahhahaha, I slay myself.
