Hey, firstly he is a coal burner what is there not to get along. Entertainment is a serious matter on a coal board when it is 100* out there.

Absolutely, that's why I turned the hot tub way down and made it into a cool pool yesterday. Was pretty nice last night when it was still 88 degrees out.

Why not just a regular capacitor ? Do you have a schematic ?

They are all the same. It's just a big assed motor, the biggest one the average Joe has in his house. All we are doing is trying to offset that reactive load as the compressors magnetic windings ramp up. When you know as little as I do you only know enough to follow the rules but capacitance could get bigger I guess.

As we are coming to the end of the compressor motors 22nd year, it may be getting a little tired. So fitting a hard start capacitor for less than 10 dollars seems a good idea now even though it seems to run OK and changing that contactor can't be a bad idea. From there we could go nuts and vacuum out the leaves and even wash the coils. Come Sept I will do that stuff. Like sex, propylaxis is best. Gotta try to keep those HVAC crooks off the lot.

So I may break open the piggy bank ...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002YTLFE/ref= ... UTF8&psc=1

but now I read ..
The Supco uses a Positive Temperature Coefficient Relay (as stated on their website) not a Potential Relay. Not Good! Only use Hard Start Kits that use a true Potential Relay. The RectorSeal Kickstart (2 wire) and the 5-2-1 Compressor Saver (3 wire) hard start kits use a Potential Relay. I recommend the Kickstart (it uses 2 wires that connect to the Run Capacitor - HERM and COM). But the Compressor Saver is also good (3 wires with one connecting to the common / ground on the Contactor relay). They both work the same way - the Potential Relay detects the pickup voltage (back EMF). This causes the relay to disconnect the start capacitor when the compressor reaches about 75% speed (usually less than a second). Note: Supco does have hard start kits with a Mechanical Potential Relay (Models 3W1, 3W2, & 3W3) but they are not available on Amazon.
Ouch my head hurts .. I need an IPA. I will just leave it alone. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I seem to have survived another season and I am quitting while I am ahead. I did now order this one.. and BB wants me to select a randomly chosen cap ... if i was that smart I would be driving a Bolt.

Hmmm, quite a few people reading my drivel so.....

Remember you neanderthal coal burners (thx cj)

Wear protective gloves

All circuits are live until proven otherwise, 240v will kill you.

Capacitors are live even with the power off. Learn how to ground them (youtube).

Amen.

Similar scenario at the church this week during evening VBS. No cooling in the sanctuary upstairs, holding steady at 87*. There are two goodman's that cool the sanctuary and a single goodman that cools the basement meeting room. The three goodmans are identical and were the replacements for three units that were cut out and stolen about 5 years ago.

Fans were all running when I got there, felt the coolant lines running to the exchanger and one of the units for the upstairs was warm, the other two were cold. Compressor was not kicking on for the one upstairs unit. Since the basement was 74 i took its cap (carefully discharged the 70/5mfd 440V bugger) and moved it to the bad upstairs unit and cooling commenced. The basement stayed in the 70's the rest of the evening although it was a little more humid down there. I admit I just pulled the disconnect to work on it but did not check for live wires after as he suggested.

I was able to find a replacement cap for $20 the next morning, popped it in the basement unit and all three were back on line. It isn't easy finding a place to sell one to a non-HVAC civilian. We splurged with another $20 and got a spare to keep handy since the three units are the same age. The challenge will be remembering where we put the dumb thing the next time we need it. We have a goodman here at home and this has me thinking I will check that cap value and if it doesn't match what I have on the shelf downstairs for the previous hvac unit I will pick up a spare.

By the way...I saw Amazon has a round 50 / 12.5 440V for $26.

Friends Roof Top Unit close to 40 years old...
Nobody wanted to touch it, just replace with new...
The thing was shutting down and pouring quarts of water on the floor...
Nobody had removed the service panel to look inside...
Guess who did...
Add commercial HVAC to my resume...
About 2 hours of work cleaning the pan, flushing the condensate drain...
scheduling a squirrel cage fan cleaning for when it is not so humid...
Changing the outside air mix to 15% for the summer...
Cools as it should and no water on office floor...

All sounds very professional. Horse farmers operate to a different standard.

After spending a fortune 22 years ago to have this Trane installed, the very next year it would not start as the condensate line was blocked and the pump switched off the system. A new Chinese unit was fitted and yes you guessed it next season it was gummed up again and another expensive service call was made. It was time for a CN modification. I kicked the thing until the air came on and then bipassed the damned thing with pipe into the garage drain. 19 years later it is still running as I remove the pipe at the end f the short hot season. Now this is craftsmanship.

Perfect ingenuity and no college degree to tell you how to do it. Hard to believe it can be so easy isn't it?

I like the flying wire nuts are still in place after 20 years!
Similarly I skipped the pump at the initial install and ran the pvc to the basement corner drain.

The only problem is the occasional baby black snake that finds its way up the drain & into the basement since our drain cover is also leaning on the wall. I thought by the scream that somebody murdered the wifey when she found one coiled in the laundry pile down there. :baby:

oh look a spammer!
Getting a goodman installed next week. trane too expensive.
Lincoln you will be pleased with the Goodman I put a heat pump in two years ago works great. Per the advice of a buddy who installs Tranes. Keeps the house 72 the unit cycles like you would expect a new one to do and doesn’t run all day like my old one. My buddy said a Goodman is going in his house when his old unit dies.
