Major damage to barn watering system someone opened the water just before it froze hard - so I am screwed. I am looking for a good used hangmans gallows on ebay. I am also looking at Propress copper fittings for 1/2" water. I would like to save time. Sharkbite is expensive and not so good and that stuff mounts up as I have quite a bit to do I would guess. Please not pex for this application.

Opinions?

In cold barn, i cant see why not pex?

Also if you think Sharkbite is expensive, hang on to your seat for the propress tools $.

Soldering is the cheap way. Don't forget your bleeder couplings, or you will never get it to take solder with the water in the lines.

The hell Simon, those squaws violated me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If ya have any joints that give ya trouble solderin--stick a chunk of bread inside--not sure why that works but it does--probably jus soaks up ANY stubborn moisture.:)

Had the pipes freeze here in my house when I was away and the furnace quite. Found 14 leaks when the heat came back on. Ended up replacing all the water pipes.

I've heard of the bread trick, but never tried it.

I was taught to heat all along the pipe several feet back from the joint and let it steam to dry out. Then give it a few minutes to cool down enough that it stops steaming.

Simon, the pro-press tools are very expensive. You probably have a local contractor that has them, but they will charge accordingly.

The tools are expensive and the fittings are expensive. To top it off, when you make a repair you throw everything out and need more fittings. Not just the ones you are repairing, you need two more to make it. Save yourself the grief and sweat them.

Is it possible to fab & sweat some or all of the replacement copper sections inside where it ain't so cold and then use fewer sharkbite type fittings to tie it in outside?

Well OK,I looked into it and you are all right. Now it's just going to be a boring job --- how about letting me buy a M12 tube cutter.

Sadly guys you are right. The possible efficiencies are non existent as by the time I have learned to use the technology the job will be finished. It will join the endless legion of tasks that I have learned to do in this life, never to need that skill again. However, it would be cool to play with but at to high a cost. Now where did I put that B tank?
